This is a record of playing Fallout 3 during August 2017.

I've played through Fallout 1 and 2 (with GOG) during the previous summers, not that it should help that much.

Right from the first launch and a note coming up that I should apply Microsoft XBox something or other presaged troubles. And I ran into freezing troubles while setting my levels for strength and intelligence and all that. I backed out but it froze again during the walk to the reactor during my birthday party. So..... it was off to guide country and there seemed a good one that changed the ini file and sent me outside Steam to a NexusMods site. You'd think that the devs or Steam or Bethesda could do this themselves.

Well, the patches seem to work as I've been able to make it out of the vault without any freezing or crashing. Not quite sure yet how to arm myself, but that should be easy. Probably shift or alt.

I never had to use any mods, just the changes suggested on pcgamingwiki, particularly the threaded ai and multiple cores.

Mods always make me nervous, I don't trust 'em.

All arming and equipping is done via the pipboy. (Tab by default)

To actually draw/holster your weapon, press and hold the reload key ('R').

And then there's V.A.T.S.

Thanks! The R especially should be helpful.

I stayed away from the mods too, although FOSE looked interesting. But with Steam and Windows 10, you have to use some patch or the game will freeze or crash. I made it 8 minutes, 7 of which were cut scenes.

Was trying to look like Pip-Boy, but looks more like a clone soldier created by some evil Nazi scientist.

Went to Megaton and did some of the quests. It reminded me of arriving on the island in Morrowind but that is probably the Bethesda touch.

Had some fighting with the people living in the Supermarket, but it gave me enough loot to settle in. I've set up house in Megaton so I hope I come back there later in the game. Don't really want to do too many quests here; would rather follow the main quest-line after my father. Still, it would be nice to fix their water supply.

More Megaton quests (including the easy water one) but one quest had me scout out across the river and I ran into quite a few troubles: mutants, ghouls, and those human raiders.

I'm trying to build up a cash supply and ammo supply. I've stored some food and nuke cola in my fridge and some extra fancy arms in a locker (fission, energy type weapons) but seem unable to rely on my Chinese sword and rifle. Even my 10mm takes quite a few hits to take down even simple enemies. And that leads to ammo troubles.

While it's becoming even more Elder Scrolls-like, the usual Fallout characters and issues are around. I don't know what these bobbleheads are yet, but when I find them I have a nice display case.

No crashes or freezes. Although come to think of it, there was a close call dealing with the whiny kid and his fire ants.

My first playthrough, I killed the ants but left the kid locked up in the fallout shelter (forgot he was in there).

Then the radio guy started broadcasting about what a horrible person I was.

Just no pleasing some people.

I let the kid out and he had the gall to insist that I go off and destroy the source of the fire ants. He refused to leave the area, saying he hadnt been raised to run away from his troubles. Weird, since I just told him his father was dead (which should have been a demonstration of that stupid attitude). I don't think that quest will get completed.

Explored the shore down to Rivet City. At first the idea of a ship converted into a city sounded cool, but it was easy to get lost. Wandered around and listened to some science people argue. Good to establish a fast travel spot here and picked up some mutant loot along the way.

Finally made contact with 3 Dog and learned of his plan to get a new satellite dish. I'm not sure about using nukes (although it was necessary on the large mutant) but will see how the quest for the father continues with the Museum of Technology. I wasted a lot of time thinking I needed to use the subways to get to 3 Dog and I built up my caps and ammo holdings by scavenging the dead. I also finished chapter 2 of the Wasteland Survival Guide, although putting the observer in the Mirelurk's spawning ground was a little complicated (I didnt think that you needed 'E' to open a spawn). It's feeling a bit grindy but that may be that I neglected to understand the Brotherhood's war with the mutants.

With various clues, I've tracked down my father at Vault 112 and brought him back to Rivet City. This plotline was quite gripping, although when he set up in the Jefferson Memorial, I started to feel like I was doing the Megaton plumbing quest but on a larger scale. Ended up in the Brotherhood of Steel -- and while all this took quite a few hours to complete, the quests passed by so feverishly that it felt like no time at all.

For all the open-worldiness of this game, the main plot is quite good -- maybe that's a key to making an open world work.

Took on the quest to get the GECK and after a long gruelling battle -- made more annoying that the only beds to rest in were back in Lamplighter Caverns -- I succeeded only to fail. That was a bit frustrating but the followup quest at the Enclave was good, even if the battle was also a bit surprising. If I had know this was coming of course I would have rested up.

Still made it out and had two new 'friends', a mutant who everyone wants to kill, and some whining kid that I want to kill.

So the end came mighty fast and you're a bit steam-rolled to following that thread once you return to the Citadel. I tried the one ending
Spoiler (click to reveal)
in which I died
and tried the other ending
Spoiler (click to reveal)
in which the leader of the Pride dies
but neither let me continue, instead the credits just rolled.

All in all, I think this was an excellent game, both by Bethesda Elder Scrolls standards and the past Fallout games.

What I enjoyed the most was a strong prevailing story line and options for a few side quests when wanted. There were occasional frustrations in not knowing what or where at certain times and the combat could be a little too complex for smooth progress, but those were all well within limits to make the game's toughness enjoyable. From beginning to end, with an hour or two perhaps with idling, I took 30 hours to complete the main story line. I think if I was to do it again, it could be completed in less than 10 hours.

I strongly feel that the joy of this game (to me) was how it balanced open world with main quest line. There was no grinding but the chance to get on with things was always available.

The broken steel dlc fixes this issue (although that dlc doesn't add much else of value.)

Thanks, I wondered if any of the DLC would do this.

I feared I'd have to use one of my pre-end saves, stop mid-attack, and go back to Megaton. I assume they would wait on the final attack until I go back months later.
