I received my copy from GMT yesterday and will now start learning the rules.

I like playing on a playmat. I found one Playmat V1.0 in the file section, it's 24"x24" for 5x5 terrain cards. Somebody mentioned that this is not big enough ... and I have no idea.

What's the maximum size for mission terrain in FoF1? Thanks!

The map can easily extend past with what you start with when you have to place enemy units outside the map.

Since enemy placement is based on its range and terrain line of sight, I believe the farthest a map can grow from any one side is by 3 cards. It's rare, but it can happen.

You can get an idea of the overall size by looking at the setup information for each mission. As Phillip mentioned, the map can extended to 3 cards on the left, right, and top based on events that occur during the scenario. I think the widest is somewhere around 6 cards, for a potential total width of 12 cards.
