Trying to learn the base game to teach. Pretty much understand it all but the performance area.

1) why would I ever want to be on Thursday and lose the game and gold? There doesn't seem to be any advantage to going first in the performances. Choosing which card to do doesn't really matter since you'll just pick the one you have more tricks on anyhow?

What am I missing?

On a similar note why would I never just pick Sunday?

If someone chooses the only performance with your tricks before you do, you do not get your backstage specialist bonuses, nor do you get the performance bonus.

Thursday is a great day to prepare the tricks behind the stage. I.e. don't use the Magician, but the other crew behind the curtains. They will get a +1 bonus action on Thursday.

This way the other guys who has a show on another day, may have you as a Sideshow Bob and then you'll get their bonuses.

On Sunday you'll have to be well prepared, as you get -1 Action points. So the basic assistant (1 ap) can't do anything. It's a darn busy day.

I hope this helps.

Both Thursday and Sunday modify your backstage actions as well. Thursday is +1, Sunday is -1.

Yeah thanks. The base game is pretty straight forward but the performance stuff is definitely a bit confusing

And therein lies the strategy - f$#! friends that need the extra action points in set up on Thurs, perform when you're ready on Sundays to gain extra rewards...

If you send any of your workers to a day in the theater, you will still get the trick modifier for that day if someone else performs one of your tricks. The only time you get the same modifier as the performing magician is if you didn't send anyone to the theater.

Damn, is it so? Thanks for pointing this out, I need to re-check it next time if we've been playing incorrectly... (Nothing life&death stuff as everyone got their bonuses, but still good to know)

Rulebook v1.11 - page 17 (top right corner) wrote:
The payouts of Thursday and Sunday are different than those of Friday and Saturday. When having at least one Character on a Thursday slot, the player subtracts 1 from the Fame and Coin yields of all of his or her Performed Tricks, while when having one on any Sunday slot, he or she adds 1 to the Fame and Coin yields of all of his or her Performed Tricks. This also applies when the player’s Tricks are part of another player’s Performance, and when the player’s Magician is not present in the Theater. If the player has no Characters at all in the Theater when his Tricks are Performed, he receives the same Yield modifiers as the performer. A Trick’s Fame or Coin yield can never be less than 0.

(My italics and bold.)

The beginning of this paragraph is a bit confusing. Especially the bit that says "and when the player’s Magician is not present in the Theater", because I think that could be interpreted either as "even when the Magician is not in the Theater" (seemingly the correct interpretation), or as "only when the Magician is not in the Theater".

But the last part (in bold) is pretty specific that you only get the performing Magician's bonus if you have no characters of your own in the Theater.
