Played "Well met"and it still felt kinda like the introductory quests. Quite "light" is what it feels like. Not that many choices really. Does the base game get more tactical as it progresses or is there a step up with expansions? Or is this it?

"Well Met" is still on the introductory side. The scenarios definitely get harder! You get more resources, powers, items and such as the scenarios go and you really have to choose how to use them wisely, against increasingly touch challenges.

then gets even better with expansions as each "boss" bring their own mechanics to the game!!...this really is a massively underrated Dungeon crawler.

Well met is a good primer how you have to play the mission and just not try to kill everything which will leave you bogged down quick. I have also found that a lot depends on these very first attacks and such. A little luck and skill in the overlord can bottle up the heroes on one side which will cause the heroes to time out.
