Oh man, if only we had local religious leaders condemning furryism(?) this would hit the whole R+S+P trifecta.

Edit:
Quote:
Chamberlain, whose avatar is a foxlike character named “Gray Muzzle,”

I have no idea what the "average" furry should look like or whatever, but I can absolutely see this dude dressing up like a fox and getting freaky.

Dressing up as an animal in your spare time ought to be a non-story. It's this bit that seems worthy of scrutiny:

Quote:
The profile includes a list of Chamberlain’s “loves,” “likes” and “hates,” some sexual in nature, but also said that he “tolerates” rape.
Quote:
Chamberlain had said the private site, sofurry.com, requires users to sort topics into four categories — “loves,” “likes,” “tolerates” and “hates” — to manage the content sent to them. “It’s basically a search feature,” he said.

The context is a bit unclear here... the first quote sounds really bad whilst the clarifying paragraph seems to suggest that it's just a way of filtering content (probably adult fiction and cartoons?).

That you don't enjoy but will tolerate rape scenes in erotic adult fiction is certainly not the sort of thing that is best advertised to voters but it's also a bit different from being a fan of erotic rape fiction and very different from tolerating rape IRL.

He should not have resigned. Fantasy role play is a consensual activity between adults that is legal and does no harm.

He didn't go out of his way to publicize his private interests. Some jerk investigated him for the purpose of wrecking his political career. Chamberlain did nothing wrong.

Which leaves us with some possibilities.

1) He's innocent of wrongdoing, but ashamed.
2) He's innocent of wrongdoing, but not ashamed, but realizes that in our culture, being what it is, he will not be an effective public servant with this always being brought up. His political career now being over, at least in his eyes.
3) There is something else that further digging may reveal that is less than innocent.

I suspect that possibility "2" on your list is the correct one. I also think that a public servant should fight injustice and irrational witch hunts. The way to do this is not to resign. He was elected by the people, not appointed. He has committed no crime. Small minded people spoke against him, but he should have fought back.

Agree about fantasy role play between consenting adults; have fun. But there was also something about him "tolerating rape", which may have been a bigger issue.

Clearly, he didn't mean that he tolerated actual rape. He meant he tolerated fantasy role play. Playing out a scene between a pirate and a rich merchant's daughter is neither illegal nor immoral.

It depends on perspective. If presented from th e male perspective it's a sign of mysoginy and insecure need to dominate. If presented from the female perspective (hetero genre) then it's a harlequin romance novel.

Fantasy role play usually involves pretending to do something that is illegal or taboo. It is within the normal range of sexual expression.

I agree with Mike. This seems kind of rough.

If the guy didn't actually do anything, exposing his personal life seems wrong. It is unreasonable to expect our elected officials to be puritanical because if we did we'd have no elected officials. And if this was a harmless release for this guy, then I don't think he should have had to quit.

I will say I'm impressed he wasn't making excuses or saying he didn't do it.

Except we all "tolerate rape" in the fiction we consume. It is on TV every week. That is why context is important.

Do some research on Consensual Non-Consent - not nearly as binary (or even bad) as you make it out to be.

Obviously, Non-Consent is 100% bad - but it sounds like he is talking Consensual Non-Consent.

Yeah, as presented, this is a complete non-issue and it is definite shame the guy is resigning over this. Who the fuck cares what weird sexual kinks people have.

Well, I could see where constituents could be concerned that a representative might be sympathetic to rape culture because they read rape fiction for kicks. Not saying that is the case here, but lets not pretend that what kind of porn you consume couldn't bleed over into your judgment outside of masturbation sessions.

Most often it doesn't, though. Unless it can be demonstrated that something like that happened here, I'm pretty horrified that this happened.

Being a public official does involve placing one's self under a high level of scrutiny, but this feels like the equivalent of ransacking someone's house. We're all entitled to have our own interests and hobbies and sex lives, and I doubt there's anyone here whose life is so wholesome that they couldn't be slandered for it if someone dug hard enough.

As soon as this nation manages to pull its head out of its ass when it comes he hypocrisy it displays around topics involving sexuality, the better off we'll be. Somehow we managed to accept living in a society where a movie about a demonic clown-beast murdering children is perfectly acceptable, but people's masturbatory habits are still considered dangerous.

Please note: I am all for movies about demonic clown-beasts, and if I somehow learned that a local politician had decided to masturbate to said film, I'd shrug at the incredible variety of human experiences and go about my day.

Man, I hope not. That would ruin my Friday nights...although I'm a bit tired of wearing the blonde wig and short skirts.

Interesting that this happened in New England. I thought they were a bit more sophisticated than this. Of course, we live in the easily-offended age, so there's that. And if I thought the guy was actually a rape fetishist, I would have been on the opposite side. But I know furries -- weird but harmless.
