Tried our first game yesterday and this part of the rules really confused us:

Quote:
Each Battle card shows how many cubes each player must add to their
side of the Battlefield. Take the cubes from the Supply or the player’s
Reserve at the choice of the owning player, and place them on the half
of the Battlefield card closest to the owning player

1. Some of the Battle cards show just one red cube or one white cube. How do you interpret this? If only that colour player places a cube, surely the battle would immediately end (as only one player has cubes on the battlefield)?
2. The "owning player" in this case means the owner of the Battle card I guess, so they get to choose whether both players must choose their cubes from either the supply or their reserve?

When the battle is chosen, players add cubes as indicated. The Battle does not resolve immediately as you have the rest of the turn to play your cards for CPs/actions etc and mess with that 'starting situation'.

You're right that the battle ends if only one player has cubes on the battlefield, but this is assessed at the beginning of the battle (part 5 in the rulebook), after the Play Action Cards part of the game (part 4). So the player without cubes on the battlefield must ensure that they get at least one cube on the battlefield during part 4 of the game, otherwise they will lose the battle immediately at the start of part 5.

This is great little game. We found the first couple of rounds a bit confusing, with lots of referral to the rulebook, but after a couple of plays it all runs pretty smoothly.
