In "Iron Man," Black Sabbath makes some extraordinary claims. Please rate these by likelihood, and then please discuss your answers. Remember, this is for SCIENCE.*

Poll
Rate the likelihood of each of these claims made by the narrator in "Iron Man."
Very likely Somewhat likely Somewhat unlikely No at all likely
He could be turned to steel in a great magnetic field.
He could travel time for the future of mankind.
He would kill people that he once saved.
He would fill his victims full of dread using boots of lead.

If I saw somebody wearing boots of lead, my reaction would probably be "what a stupid pair of boots," not so much dread. So I only called that "somewhat likely."

Killing people you once saved though, sure, that's doable.

I'm not aware of any experiment where iron was turned into steel using a magnetic field - even a great magnetic field. So, I judged that as Not at All Likely. However, if someone was coming at me wearing boots of lead, it would scare the crap out of me. So, that one was Very Likely.

Whatever you do, don't listen to the song linked in this youtube video. It will make your ears bleed, your children cry, and your boss very, very disappointed in you and your work.

Seriously, I hate that song. I like the original, and I like at least one other song by the Cardigans, but they are forever tainted in my memory as the band who brought forth that abomination upon this world. May as well call 'em the C'thardigans.

People are clearly torn about the "travel time" question. Without some further explanation of how that was accomplished (maybe a follow-up song?), I figured that was somewhat unlikely.

Killing people that he once saved? Wickedly cruel, yes, but clearly mankind had it coming.

I've been traveling in time for 47 years now, don't plan to stop any time soon.

Oh, I have no trouble admitting that it's Lovefool. I have zero shame over my terrible musical tastes. I just don't remember the First Band on the Moon album well enough to know if there's anything other than Lovefool that I liked. After I heard Iron Man, I pretty much lost all interest in revisiting the album as a whole entity.

Agree. All it would make him is Magnetic Man.

And his lead boots would fall off.

I was more certain than most about the "turning to steel" thing. I think the idea is that the intense magnetic field would disrupt his circuitry and render him an inert lump of metal.

I thought that the idea was that the magnetic field would embed carbon or tin or whatever into Iron Man's iron, turning it to steel. Since the alloys needed are non-magnetic that seemed unrealistic to me.

I don't understand all the doubt. It is Iron Man. Iron Man! He once travelled through time to save us! And then he tried to kill us! Don't any of you remember?! The boots! The boots were made of lead!!

I associate lead boots with old timey diving not time travel. Lead boots and belts were what you needed with your bronze diving bell helmet. So lead boots are a thing, and could be terrifying in a Gene Simons kind of way.

So, in the past week I've heard "Iron Man" probably half-a-dozen times on the radio since seeing this thread. Coincidence? I don't think so!
