Going Further
by Claudio Moratto

Hurray, your company just got a lucrative job: build a road between two cities.
But the computer managing the production line just went bananas and random building material comes out of the factory.
Do you give up? Well, partly.
Forget about joining the two cities with a wonderful infrastructure, just try to use the material as it is ready and build as much as you can!

Going further is a very fast solo game, estimated playing time with standard rules is between 1 and 5 minutes (depending on the cards you have). Its playing speed makes Going Further ideal to be played in group, challenging the score of your mates.

The game can be customised making it more or less difficult, or by introducing a luck element. It could be also used as a sort of puzzle game.

The game material is composed by 72 cards and the instructions.

Rules for the CONTEST READY EDITION can be found here.

The pnp file for the CONTEST READY EDITION is there!

After Going Further has been declared CONTEST READY, Nigel Kennington made some stunning graphics, neat and clean.

So, for the Best Artwork & Graphic Design category, and for a better playing experience, please have alook at this:

Re: [WIP] Going Further - Idea phase
Just based on this short description and considering the short length of the game, I was wondering whether it could be a good candidate for real-time gaming. Just a couple of rounds of 1 min each for instance?

Re: [WIP] Going Further - Idea phase
Hi Julien,
indeed your idea is one of the playing option I propose.
Limiting the playing time has actually two results:
1) It is fast and can be played by many people
2) It adds a bit of adrenaline, removing/reducing the "optimal" configuration search (that is still a possibility for puzzle lovers in a different game mode).

I think I will be able to post the rules before the week-end end (sorry for the joke, it sounds funny for a not native English speaker), however I add some spoiler here.
Going Further is a tile placement type of game. The more tiles you place the higher the possibility to have a good score, but the kind of tiles and the pattern you make play also a large role for scoring high.
When all the cards are shown at the beginning and you have illimited available time, it is a sort of puzzle game: find the optimal solution, that changes every game as the initial tile placement is always (99.999...%)different.
When you limit the available time, well you have to think fast, errors are possible and I hope a laugh is guaranteed.
If you want a less determined game, you keep uncovered some of the cards at the beginning, and you reveal them as the game progresses. This induces an additional luck component, useful if you play against a human calculator that otherwise will always win!
So, these are the main characteristics.

It is for sure a game with simple rules and fast setup, a game kids can play on the beach, for a family reunion, or for a train trip. It is however a thinking game. Finding the right set of cards that maximises the number of choices to make is my main task now. I think this is the point where this game, and most of them, can succeed or fail miserably.

Re: [WIP] Going Further - Idea phase
I hate to be "that guy", but if the name "Going Further" is a reference to trying to get your roads to go farther, it technically should be called "Going Farther". If it's a reference to making your materials go further (having them be as useful as possible), then "Going Further" is correct. Of course, it's a little different for British English, but in most standard, non-British English, Farther is used for physical distance and Further is used for metaphorical/figurative distance.

With that out of the way, I am excited to see how this game turns out. The theme seems very interesting.

Re: [WIP] Going Further - Idea phase
Thanks Joshua, knowledge of the English language is not my strong point, so every correction is appreciated.
Honestly I was not aware of the difference and now I have the doubt about the name of the game.
My intention was to give a name that meant both, building a longer road and pushing yourself to find the best choices.
I might raise a poll.

In this case, I would say that Further may be appropriate. It is more commonly accepted in reference to physical distance than Farther is when speaking figuratively. Sorry to make you doubt the name. I think it's clever.

Re: [WIP] Going Further - 2017 Mint Tin Design Contest - Idea Phase
Cool little game! Hopefully I'll get to play it soon. Are you planning on adding more complexity to it? Or are you trying to keep it light? I do like the different ways to play. The flexibility of gameplay is something I really like in games, even if its something minimal.

Honestly, for me, the numbers just come of as 1). distracting 2). unimportant. Now, if I saw a 5 or even a 3 point road, It would make for some interesting maneuvers and cause me to have a more difficult decision. It was also thinking about a combo system with three types of roads (asphalt, dirt, gravel). If you place at least three of the same road type in connected you get a special action or gain +1 point for each road of the same type connected after at least two. Just some ides I thought of after looking at the rules .

My idea is too keep it light. I have ideas to make it more complex, such as introducing some architectural feature (buildings, rivers, gardens...) and also to make it multiplayer (4 players, 1 each side of the initial square: some tiles are available to more than one player). But I do see the "Mint tin" edition as light as its weight.

Good point, it might cause me a bit to understand how I want to improve this. Maybe rewarding even more difficult types of roads, as you suggest. However, I do not want the game to become the search of the "golden tile". Both valuable tiles and longer roads deserve their share of points.

I like this, just have to think how to implement it. Having a patchwork of different type of roads is not "graphicaly" appealing, maybe you should be allowed to change the type of road only seldomnly, something like the narrow road types.
Thanks for the good comments!

do not worry ... the game is interesting, it deserves a better presentation ... I'll sketch you and then tell me what you think ...

non ti preoccupare ... il gioco è interessante, merita una presentazione migliore ... ti faccio uno schizzo e poi mi dici cosa ne pensi ...

Hi there,

the pnp file is here.

Number of cards is 48, idea was to reduce it to 40, let's see.

If anybody is testing the game, please let me know whac cards you would like to be replaced/removed!

I hope you have fun!

Re: [WIP] Going Further - 2017 Mint Tin Design Contest - Idea Phase
In order to raise some interest in Going Further I start a quest:
who is able to get a score of 72, or more, with the following starting configuration?

Going Further quest 1

Initial tiles are on the bottom line showed in the linked file.

So far, this is the situation:

1 Toober - 10 pts

That cover looks great. I have seen the graphics for your games, you are very a good artist.
Can I use it for this contest?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Have you tried the game? Do you have any comment?

I tried Chlamys some time ago and left a comment. I think I have not played properly. How is the game progressing?

I will try Mintcristo and leave you a comment on the game play during the week end.

ti sembrerà strano, ma ho provato il gioco mentre componevo la grafica della copertina.... è un bellissimo esempio di puzzle intelligente... io lo provo con i bambini, e lo hanno trovato divertente e anche...stancante!

you will feel strange, but I tried the game while composing the cover art .... it's a beautiful example of clever puzzle ... I try it with the kids, and they found it fun and even ... tiring!
