What is maximum legal revenue for one company in 1846? I calculate 1270 (solution i will post after a few days), but maybe someone will find more.

I found 1270 as well, as follows:

Two 7/8 trains:

CHI connections - CHI - CIN - DET - TOL(skip) - CLE - ERIE - BUF (with Mail) = 720

STL - CIN - PT HURON (skip) - DET - TOL - CLE - ERIE - BUF = 550.

Total, 1270.

(there are just enough exits in TOL, DET, and CIN that this could be configured, though the track might be a bit unusual).

Though, now that I realize it, the company could theoretically (though extremely unlikely) also have up to two phased out green 3/5T's or 4T's for one turn that doesn't count against the limit -- making the true maximum more than $1270...

(This only works if the company we are running bought two 7/8 trains while holding exactly two green trains -- could not be more because brown limit is three trains, but buying one 7/8 immediately phases the greens)

EDIT: Thinking this through: the 90 and 50 cities won't have enough exits to pass through them a third time (there are no six way connections in 1846).

So: two routes starting in Chicago proper (90), ending at a red off board 70 space (one in StL and one in Louisville), and crossing two 40 cost cities (likely IND/TH). That's another 240 per train, 480 in all... bringing us to $1750.

And then we switch Toledo (only hit once with the 7/8's) to a 40 and one of the green routes to a 50 city. So we lose 10 but gain 20, for a maximum payout of...

$1760

EDIT 2: The 90 spaces have five exits, so instead of ending at a 70 space, it may be possible to construct things so they end at CIN and CLE which could still have one unused track. So with the other ends being 90, instead of 70, that's another $40, bringing the theoretical total to...

$1800

In theory, in step III $1,350 should be possible: run three 6-trains from E-W (6*$90), running through the Z-cities 6 times (6*$60), once through Chicago (1*$70), and five times through any other brown city (5*$40): $1,170. (e.g. $410+$380+$380)

Mail Contract adds $60, Meat Packing also $60 (2*$30 in St. Louis), and Steamboat $80 (2*$40 in Wheeling). However, the Wheeling E will then only give $90 once, the other will have $20 less, so in effect it's another $60.

$1,170 + $180 = $1,350

I'll try to build this in the Survey Party app later.

Edit: update on this: I forgot that Wheeling can only be upgraded to green, so the total is $20 less. Picture:

Orange: 90+70+60+60+70+70=$420
Green: 120+60+40+60+70+90=$440
Blue: 120+40+60+40+60+90=$410
MC: $60
Total: $1,330

This is illegal. 6Ts are grey so can only have 2. Also all privates are gone except for MC.

Argh! You're right, I misremembered and thought 6 trains were brown. So everything's invalid.

It would however be possible to make that three 5Ts, reducing the income by 3*$40 and $10 for the MC. I.e. a total of $1,200 in phase III.

I am only finding $590 for this run.

90+90+70+60+50+60(skip Erie)+90+80 = 590

90+70+60+50+60+30+9 = 450?

What am I missing???

I also tried the 7/8 + 4 combination and arrived at $1,550 $1,570:

4T: Chicago Conn., Chicago, Detroit, Windsor = $330
4T: Chicago, Ft. Wayne, Cincinnati, Louisville = $260
7/8T: Buffalo, Erie, Cleveland, Toledo, Ft. Wayne, Indianapolis, St. Louis = $420
7/8T: Buffalo, Erie, Cleveland, Toledo, Detroit, Dayton (skip), Cincinnati, St. Louis = $460

MC: $80

Edit: just noticed there are two gray tiles for a non-Z city, so we could still upgrade either Ft. Wayne or Erie to get $20 more.

Ah right, I forgot there are only two grey Z's, so I was $20 over. I had mistakenly counted six 90's for $450 (actually $430) plus 80 for mail ($510) plus two more cities. Should have only been five...

My favorite 18xx game for six players is two games of 1846 with three players each.
