Microgames are Awesome!

I am excited about seeing more new games this year.
I am working with other designers and publishers as we speak, to make a series of 18 cards games.
Some were even in this contest.

I can't make any promises, but we are always looking for 18 card games.
Now that I work for a game manufacturer, even more!

......................................................

This contest has very specific limitations.
You need to design a game using 18 cards exactly.

The game rules need to be included into the cards.
Or have an extra rule sheet the size of 2 cards

The rule sheet was 3.5 x 5 (the size of 2 cards side by side , front/back).
If you use the rules on the cards, maybe use the rules sheet for a diagram or something. The rule sheet is not to be used for game play.

**I want to do 18 cards only again.

Also, and this might scare people. No components.
Paper and pencil could be used for scoring, hard to avoid in some cases.
If you like components, check out the spring mega microgame challenge.
We will allow 18 small components in one category.

Deadline
Contest starts - Sep 18, 2017
Geeklist opens - Oct 3, 2017
Submission Deadline - Dec 15, 2017
Voting Starts - Jan 1, 2018
Voting ends - Jan 15th, 2018
Results Announced Jan 18th, 2018

Rules
1. Games must have exactly 18 cards.
2. The game needs to be a "Print and Play" file
3. Each game needs a logo (this will also be your game title pic)
4. Each game needs a pic of the cards (2 pages across, 9 cards per page)
5. Poker size cards (2.5 x 3.5)(63mm x 88mm)
6. Rules must be included somewhere in the 18 cards.
7. You may get one artist to help with the artwork if needed.
8. You must have permission to use all artwork.
9. You will retain all rights to your game.
10. Enter as many times as you want.
11. No restrictions on theme.
12. Try to play and comment on 3 games per 1 game you enter.
13. You are allowed to require players to alter cards (cut, fold, punch) but do it at your own risk. As long as it starts with 18 cards.
14. Game must not be from another contest!
15. You can't use components such as dice, meeples, and chips.

Prizes
Tips given here and on the geeklist will be combined and given to the winners. I will also donate gg into the pot.
Please throw some money in there to make it juicy.

A voting poll will be attached to contest page and geeklist.

A poll will be created for each category.
1. Best Game. (1st, 2nd, 3rd)(40%, 20%, 10%)
2. Best Art. 10%
3. Best theme 10%
4. Most original 10%

All the money donated will be divided between the category winners.

Current Prize Pot: 150 gg

Files
There will be a geeklist for the entries.
Post your entries in the WIP thread.
I suggest using dropbox.
Also upload a logo pic and cards pic into your gallery and post a link.

And..
The plan right now is to publish a series of 18 card games.
I am considering individually packaging them or packaging as a set.
More to come on that later.

I think kickstarter will be a good option.
I know everyone will want to know the terms.
It will be industry standard.
I will lay out the terms when they are decided.

I'm confused by the above paragraph.

Is it 18 cards + 1 3.5"x5" "rules only, but not a component in the game" (which is honestly preferable) or is it "18 cards, some number of them must be dedicated to the rules", which typically causes creation of a game with fewer than 18 actual cards as components?

Further...
2014 was 18 cards (only)
2015 was 18 cards + rulesheet
2016 was 18 cards (only) an an indication that inclusion of rulesheet would be alternating years (meaning odd numbered years would allow the bonus rulesheet)

This year the rules should be included in the 18 cards.
Or have extra rules. Check above. It is a challenge.

Fine with or without extra rules sheet, but please update the rules to make sure it is obvious which one it is this year.

We tried alternating years with rules included in the 18 cards and without. This year the rules should be included in the 18 cards. It is a challenge.

I don't understand how you've tried 'alternating' years if there was only ever one year (2015) that had a rulesheet allowed and it's currently 2017.

That looks more like you tried it once and have decided you didn't like it.

Note: That's fine - you run these contests ( and I'm glad for them even if I haven't gotten to completion on a project yet ) and get to set the boundaries, and boundaries are good.

I just want to understand intent in past, present and future.

Rules must fit on the same space as 2 extra cards.
I like the box, but that can come later.
Just make the game 18 cards with the rule sheet equal to the same space as 2 cards.

Just to be completely clear, you can use either:

- 18 cards (3.5"x2.5") + rules sheet (3.5"x5")
- or just 18 cards (so the rules have to be on the cards)

Can the cards be double-sided?
Can I use both sides for the game purposes? (That way you would have to print four A4.)
Can I use the back of the cards for the rules?

Thank you for clearing it out for me. I am looking forward to the contest.

Yes, both are excepted.
if you do put rules on cards, you could use rule sheet for a diagram or pic or something.

yes double sided
yes 4 sheets
yes rules can be on back

check out previous year's contests
lots of examples

Hack, I sense the same questions coming up each year. Maybe the rules (first post in the thread) could be more clear, pointing out things like being allowed to use both sides etc? And cut out some of the stuff about publishing games, the rules for other years of the contest, as they only distract from the actual (current year) contest rules?

Are you allowed to require players to use a piece of paper to keep score? No other components, just "Use a pen and paper to keep track of points" ? Thanks for organizing the contest!

Allowance of pen&pencil for keeping score is mentioned in rules:

Quote:
Also, and this might scare people. No components.
Paper and pencil could be used for scoring, hard to avoid in some cases.
If you like components, check out the spring mega microgame challenge.
We will allow 18 small components in one category.

Thanks, I read over a few times and didn't catch that. Not for lack of trying. Just need new glasses, perhaps?

Damn, those rules limitations are killing me.

(Just to make sure - either unlimited rules size printed directly on cards or additional sheet in size of 2 standard cards, right?)

I managed to throw away almost every unneccessary thing I found, but still I have about one and half paragraphs stuck on 5th side.

The game is made of full 18 card set, so I am forced to use only 4 "pages".

I think I will finally make a WIP thread, maybe someone will help me narrow down the rules to make them both understandable and compact enough.

I think the goal of the rules limitation is not to cram as much rules as possible on the available space, but rather to streamline the rules itself and to get rid of every rule that is too complicate or not necessary.
For me the term "microgame" not only defines the small amount of playing material but also means that the game has simple rules.

Are 18 cards the entire game?
Or are games allowed, where each player fields the same 18 cards, and the game grows linear with each player participating?

18 cards is the entire game, shared between all the players.

It's a tight restriction, but awesomeness can result! (e.g. Circle the Wagons)

In what way am I allowed to use paper and pencil?
- only for simplifying the endgame scoring
- counting (adding) the score during the game, keeping track of health (it can represent a score in a way), atc.
- managing more different resources
- writing down constructed buildings, upgrades, technologies, drawing a map of some sort, atc.
