With the game set-up in Zun Tzu, getting it off the table in time for dinner in't an issue. So, now, at last, I might get through a full game, knock on wood.

Our game begins with King's division of four brigade, marching east on the Warrenton Turnpike headed for Centreville. The head of the column has just reached Groveton when suddenly...

August 28th, 1862, 5pm

Jackson checks and is in command. He opens the ball with Shumaker's artillery firing on Doubleday some 1300 yards away. The 95 NY passes the two cohesion checks incurred.

Jackson's entire command wiggles into a more comfortable position, making use of the rail-road bed; while Talliaferro, Starke, and Baylor move forward, the latter two into contact with Gibbon's brigade on the Warrenton Turnpike. The ensuing combat put two Union regiments totaling 13 SP on the card, while the Confederate loose 3 regiments totaling 9 SP.

CS artillery rain another two hits on the troops on the pike, but Doubleday's men seem to have brought their umbrellas.

King fails his command roll, being out of command range of Sigel (acting army commander) and so needing to roll a 1 to be in command. As a result, Gibbons and Doubleday's brigades can't counter-attack and miss a chance to take out some isolated Louisiana troops sitting in the road. Instead, King shores up his line, refuses his flanks, and braces for what's likely to be coming.

Meanwhile, Sigel advances his corps to Dogan Ridge, anchoring his right on Matthews Hill and his left on Chinn Ridge. Reynolds brings the PA Reserves as far as the the Old Warrenton, Alexandria, and Washington Road (Wawa?). The plan at the moment is for Reynolds to take up position on Sigel's left, and King to slide to Reynold's left, but we'll have to see what Jackson has in store for us.

Aug28 5pm

August 28, 6pm
Shumaker hits the 95 NY again, running it off the road this time. Courtney fires on Hatch's troops in Groveton, but Union return fire runs off some of Trimble's men, including Courtney's guns.

Talliaferro, Starke, and Baylor attack Gibbon and Doubleday while Lawton comes forward to hit Hatch's brigade. The Confederate knock 31 SP's (all of Gibbon and Doubleday) off the map while only loosing 9 SP themselves. King only has two brigades and the Confederates have made an 11 hex gap between them.

Union artillery manages to disorder some Confederates, but not much else. Patrick sets-up on Stuart's Hill while Hatch moves back to Young's Branch to try to connect with the rest of the division.

Reynold moves west with the intend of pushing forward between Pageland and Lewis Lanes.

Schenk moves up on Schimmelfennig's right extending Sigel's line north-east just 500 yards short of Bull Run.

August 28th, 7pm and Night
Jackson fails his command roll, as do Talliferro and A.P.Hill.
Artillery lobs some shells at Patrick's brigade, with no effect, and Union artillery can't seem to find any targets. There'll be no Confederate attack in this last daylight turn and the three brigades that did attack are pulled back to the Brauner farm to redress the line.

The artillery opens up again and the Union artillery manages to disorder some of Field's troops, but no more.

Milroy moves up behind the high ground near Groveton
while Reynolds works his way up on Milroy's left. Schenk leads the rest of his division to join Milroy while Schimmelfennig takes his place.

Gibbon and Doubleday manage to recover a regiment each, and then it is night.

August 28, night turns

Little movement except for Robertson's cavalry arriving and taking up a position on Stuart's Hill, on the right of Jackson's line.
A few regiments get recovered leaving the Union with 10 SP permanently eliminated, and the Confederates with 3 SP. King's division is capable of fighting again.

August 29th, 5am
This turn will be explained in a bit more detail than usual to demonstrate some of the mechanics of the game.

Jackson rolls for command. He needs a 5 or less, rolls a 2, which, because he's out of command range of Lee (not on map yet) get 1 added to the roll. Talliferro is stacked with Jackson, so automatically is in command. Ewell rolls a 5 so is not in command. A.P.Hill is out of range so adds 1 to his roll of 2. 3 is less-than 4 so he's in command.

Shumaker and Pelham have no targets, but Courtney fires at the troops in Groveton getting a cohesion check (CC), which they pass. Walker has a clear shot at the 58th NY, but opts to fire at the fatter target of Kryzanowski and the 2 regiments he's stacked with. It's partially obscured reducing him by 1 on top of being halved for the range; he rolls a 5 which nets a CC, which the 54th NY fails disordering the whole stack. Kryzanowski is a brigade commander so doesn't have to check for command casualties.

Three artillery units totaling 4 SP sit on Matthew's Hill and only have one hex they can target; 1813. 4 guns at range 6 are halved to 2, less one because the target is in woods (partially obscured). Rolling a 1 on the 1 column of the Artillery Fire Table gets one hit. The 22nd and 47th VA both fail their CC's and since they're already D1, are forced to retreat and revert to D2.

As Pope's army is mostly coming from Centreville, about 28 hexes east of the Stone Bridge, and with A.P.Hill in command, attacking Sigel and driving him back past the turnpike could make Reynolds and King to feel a need to retire, especially when Longstreet shows up. So, this will be the plan.

Hill advances Gregg and Archer to attack vonSteinwher directly, with Field in support. Thomas, Pender, and Branch move into the railroad bed in their place.

Talliferro advances his division across the turnpike with Robertson dismounting on Stuart's Hill covering the right. This leaves Ewell and half of A.P.Hill's divisions holding the railroad bed line in reserve in case this turns out badly.

On the CS left, Gregg attacks Koltes' 68th and 73rd NY (7 SP) with 14 SP. Orr's Rifles has a CR of 4 so the DRM is -1. A 4 is rolled, becoming a 3 on the 2-1 column; D1. The US opts to lose the 2 SP 73rd NY and that's that. Steinwher checks for becoming a casualty and survives.

Archer, with 8 SP attacks the 29th NY with 5; 3-2 with no DRM. A roll of 5 is an EXC-AR. The US loses the 29th and Archer has to lose at least 5 SPs and retreats the 14th TN who is D2.

That round of combat done, The CS opt not to retreat Greg's people. The US take note that the CRT at 2-1 is against them with any roll of 5 or less, and the CS have a -1 DRM, so they opt to retreat 2 hexes. The CS advance the 13th and 14th SC into the vacated hex, and Orr's Rifles and the 12th SC into the unoccupied hex beside it (1621). With no units in ZOCs, that ends CS combat.

Archer/Gregg assault

Koltes lost 7 of his brigades 12 SP, so he is "shattered." Archer lost 5 SP of his brigades 14, so is not "shattered."

Aug 29 5am end of CS turn

Sigel rolls a 1 and is actually in command. Schenk accepts his command, but VonSteinwher with Koltes' brigade shattered does not. Reynolds is in command and King rolls a 1 putting him in command as well.

The artillery on Mathew's Hill fires on Greg's troops in 1620, rolling a 4 on the 5 column for 1 "hit" which they fail, putting a D2 on the stack. The rest of the artillery gets limbered as none of them have targets. The CS artillery has much the same issue with lack of targets, except Courtney who pops a shot into Groveton with no effect.

King's being in command isn't much help, as only Patrick's brigade is in his range, but with most of the army in command, this isn't a chance to be passed up.

Sigel attacks both flanks of A.P.Hill's advanced brigades while Reynolds assaults Robertson's cavalry and King hits Starke with Patrick's brigade.

US Right

US Left

Stahel attacks at 11-7 (3-2) but with +2 DRM for lower terrain and lower cohesion rating, rolling a 6 only exacerbates the problem losing him 5 SP. The CS decline advancing into the vacated hex.

On Sigel's left, Milroy and Kryzanowski bring 23 SP against 6 SP of Field's brigade (1 SP short of 4-1). A -1 DRM for a flanked attack, is offset by the D1 troops involved, and turns into a +1 because of better CS cohesion. A roll of 1 makes the matter moot. The 4 SP 1st TN is lost as it's cohesion was used and 5th AL battalion retreats to 1816. It can't retreat any further because of enemy zones of control.
Kryzanowski advances into the vacated hex with the strongest stack.

The 8th WV attacks Fields himself at 5-5 with no DRM as the CS better cohesion is negated by their D2. The 22nd VA battalion heads to the card and the 8th opts to not advance as he'd probably get stuck attacking an 8 SP stack alone next round.

The US doesn't voluntarily retreat anyone on this front, but the CS retreats the 5th AL Bat into 1716 with the 47th VA. The US responds by advancing the 2nd WV into the vacated 1816 and Kryzanowski's stack into 1817.

2 WV attacks at 6-5 with a -1 DRM getting a DR but opts not to advance. Kryzanowski attacks at 10-8 with a +2 DRM (Hill is a 4 commander) and gets a modified 6. Each side loses 4 SP, Kryzanowski retreats, and his D1 reverts to a D2. The 12th OH artillery limbers as it was forced to retreat. Hill chooses to not advance.

Sigel's assault regained some ground and took out 10 CS SPs, but it cost him 9 SPs.

At the other end of the US line...

Seymour and Meade move on Robertson's cavalry. Cavalry has the option to retreat before combat, but this option is decided as the attacker announces his intention to resolve the attack. The US decides to start on the far left with the 6th PA Reserves vs the 6th VA cavalry. The 6th VA retreats two hexes and the 6th PA advances.

Seymour's stack of 8 SP attacks the 17th VA cavalry. If the 17th retreats, he can only retreat one hex because of the ZOCs around him, he opts to retreat into the 12th VA's hex.
Meade with the 3rd, 7th, and 8th PA Reserves attack Robertson's hex at 15-4. Robertson retreats one into the 7th VA's hex and Meade advances into the vacated hex while the 7th and 8th PA advance next-door into 3205.

Moving on...

The 23rd NY attacks the 15th LA at 6-4 (3-2) with a +1 DRM, a modified 6 sends the 23rd to the card and the 15th advances.

King and Patrick attack hex 3007 at 6-5 (1-1) with a +1 DRM but roll a modified 2, The CS sends Coppin's Battalion to the card, but the US opts to not advance.

That round of combat done, the US doesn't retreat anyone, so the CS retreat the four regiment still in ZOC back two hexes and the US advances everyone eligible (the 56th PA can't advance as it's not in command).

Next combat round, the 3rd PA Reserves attacks Pelham's horse artillery, who promptly retreats one hex and the 3rd doesn't advance.

The 7th and 8th PA attack Starke at 1-1 with no DRM, and a roll of 1 sends the 10th LA to the card and the US advances into hex 3005.

King's stack attacks the 15th LA at 3-2 with a +1 DRM. A 2 becomes a 3 and the 15th retreats and is D2. The US again advances.

Another round of combat done, the US opts not to retreat but the CS retreats both stacks two hexes each, and the US doesn't follow.

Reynold's Assault

That concludes all combat. Archer's brigade is shattered, having lost 9 of 14 SPs. Overall, for the turn, the CS lost 21 SPs and the US 22 SPs.

Jackson and Ewell pass their command rolls, but Talliaferro and A.P.Hill fail theirs.

Walker's CS artillery disorganizes and retreats the 54th NY. Courtney gets a check on the Groveton stack, but they pass. Shumacker takes a long partially obstructed shot at the 7th and 8th PA Reserves and actually manages to disorder them.

US artillery fires back, eliminating the 14th SC of Gregg's brigade and disorganizing Courtney's stack.

Jackson pulls back his flank slightly, but not much else.

In the next artillery round the artillery in Groveton gets a double hit on Ewell's stack of 3 regiments and Courtney's artillery - all of which pass every roll! Walker, on the other hand, manages to eliminate the 7 SP 5th WV of Milroy's brigade.

The US moves up a little on the flanks.

Koltes recovers the 29th NY unshattering his brigade.

This turn features the new map colors and woods graphic and the new Recover marker counters.

Talliaferro and A.P.Hill fail their command rolls again, while Jackson and Ewell pass theirs.
Walker forces Kryzanowski and the Ohio artillery to fall back. While Union artillery disorganizes some infantry and Walker's artillery.

With most of his command out of command, Jackson settles for advancing Early, moving Talliaferro to the right, and Pulling Greg back to anchor the left on Bull Run.
Archer recovers the 1st TN and Starke's stack reorganizes.

7am end of CS turn

While Sigel and Reynolds fail their command rolls, much of the rest of Federal's are in command, even King.

Kryzanowski and Milroy are marked with the new "recover" markers as they will attempt to recover losses and shouldn't move.

Not much artillery fire, and what there was was ineffective.

Patrick, Doubleday, and Hatch's brigades move up to attack Lawton, Early, and Baylor hoping to push them out of the woods and across the turnpike. The PA Reserves (Reynolds' division) are out of command, but close up the gap none-the-less.

On the right, the 1st and 2nd divisions of the I corps also push forward with Stahel's brigade attacking Gregg's on Jackson's far left.
Gregg is shattered. Baylor as well with only one 2SP regiment left.
Stahel's and Patrick's are shattered, but the Federals did manage to push the Confederates back across the turnpike.

Kryzanowsi recovers the 75th PA and the US roll off a couple of D1's.

Jackson and Talliaferro are in command, Ewell and Hill are not.
Except for disorganizing some PA Reserves, artillery fire didn't acomplish must this phase.
Talliaferro's brigade moves up and attacks Patrick, eliminating the 21st NY. Advancing they then attack and eliminate Doubleday's 56th PA and retreat Gibbon's 19th IN and then Patrick's 35th NY.
Bayor recoveres the 4th VA, but he's still shattered.

In the Union turn, only Reynolds is in command and attacks Talliaferro, loosing the 3rd and 4th PA Reserve totaling 10 SPs, while the Confederates lose the 9th and 23rd VA totaling 6 SPs and shattering Starke's brigade. The Federals don't recover any regiments this turn.
