I organize board game meetups and we mostly play party games, deduction games or some lighter "real" games. What are some thematic, yet fast games to play with newbies? I played Elder Sign and love it, but it's a little bit too heavy. It can be played of course, but explaining is just too tiresome. Ghost Stories is really cool and quite easy but a little bit too long and very punishing. I would love something like Mansions of Madness as it's perfectly easy and approachable but the beast is just too long.

Any other types? It doesn;t have to be coop.

I cannot imagine what you mean. If elder sign is too heavy, maybe board games aren't for this group.

Pick a card, roll dice, match the pictures. I love elder sign, but it is not complicated.

But i'll try.

Smash Up
Grab 2 factions, play cards, repeat.

Fearsome Floors
Clank!
Pandemic (co-op)
King of Tokyo
Colt Express
Citadels
Jamaica

All fairly easy to explain and playable within 60 minutes.

+1 King of Tokyo and Colt Express, though I highly recommend the Power Up expansion for King of Tokyo. It's a little flat without it.

Forbidden Island
Ghostbusters: Protect the Barrier Game (Ghost Fightin' Treasure Hunters)
Flash Duel: Revised Second Edition

Our group is enjoying Ethnos. It's roughly as complex as Ticket to Ride, but fantasy area control instead of train route building.

Well, you can judge if you want, but I don't anything wrong with people who want to play Avalon, Bang! and occasionally something like Takenoko.

Elder sign is simple, but people tend to lose track of their multiple items, their hit points, forgetting about terror effects, midnight effects. ignoring mythos cards. The base mechanics are easy, but there's a lot to grasp around it for new players. Especially in comparison with something like Pandemic.
