Yes, I'm interested, because after five games, four of them I lose for Nemo or for Crew, and the only I arrived to final score it was insufficient for win...so I hope in better luck for you! But I have the same question of Dave: where is a character Scientist if your Motivation is War! ?

What exactly do you mean by the 'Character : Scientist' ? Where do you get to choose a character?

Hi from Germany,
thanks for the reply/questions.

I actually use a NAUTILUS II scenario. The mysterious captain now is a determined drop dead gorgeous woman. I expanded the game by assigning her 4 characters (warrior, liberator, scientist, explorer) which are selected for each game via a Hall-of-Fame procedure. The idea is to have the character of Nemo not always in line with her mission, e.g. fighting a war might by done by a captain who is driven by science rather than by the principles of war.
Each character has 29 skill levels. The higher the level the more efficient might become her skills. In addition, I designed 4 character groups per character. This way, a total of 16 characters forms the pool for Nemo.
As you might have discovered reading through my session report, I added more to the original game systems, like the Nemo networks, more Adventures, more treasures, etc. etc.
Variety in games like NW is the key element.

Cheers
U.L.H.

Really interesting, Uwe, and I enjoyed your narrative, obviously deeply scratching my head reading about networks, Nemo skill levels and Notoriety oscillating in mysterious ways....Perhaps someone in BGG could be interested to play in the same way, so why not upload a file with details about your scenario? And, this is really important for one, like me, losing every game: this scenario is easier or harder to win?
Cheers, and happy hunting! Gianluca

Turn 2 - 9
Turn 3 - 8
There were two successful Incites (a successful Incite either reduces the Notoriety score by 1 or 2).

Turn 6 - 12
Turn 7 - 11
Another successful Incite.

Turn 12 - 24
Turn 13 - 23
Another successful Incite.

Turn 22 - 34
Turn 23 - 32
The Press campaign was successfully started and scored a -2 to the Notoriety score (1d3 result).

Turn 27 - 44 BINGO! Warships are flipped/placed purple side up.
Turn 28 - 34
The Fog Machine (submarine upgrade) was activated and scored a -11 (2d6). Lucky Nemo, she is!

That's it! There's not really any change/addition to the original system; exception: The Press Campaign Adventure which I added to the game.

The curse of Notoriety (just a couple of thoughts)
The Incites are the most efficient instrument/action regarding the reduction of Notoriety. Do not hesitate to invest treasures in those tests. Place only 1 cube per ocean (in the first two thirds of the game, otherwise the counter-attacks of the imperialistic powers (triggered by Lull turns) will swiftly remove your cubes or force you to suffer Notoriety again).
Once you have to roll 3 white dice, the chance for Lull turns dramatically drops. 2 white dice: 17% chance for a Lull turn; 3 white dice: 3% for a forced Lull turn. The bad side: Avoiding a Lull turn will force you to place 4 or even 5 new ships (hidden and/or revealed) instead of 3 or 4. But that's the beauty of the game system: There is no singular path to victory; all options come with advantages AND disadvantages. The player/s has/have to decide within each specific situation what to do next.
Always keep in mind the overall objective!
Avoid the dreaded space 44 as long as possible as triggering the extra black die does only promise more trouble (no gain at all). This is, of course, only valid if Nemo is fighting a war or is out to liberate the world.
Space 36 turns the seas into battlefields, especially if the Relentless Pursuit option is used (which I strongly recommend). The "purple" warships are tough and deadly; sooner or later, the submarine will be shot to pieces.
Rest and Repair eat up actions (unless applied during Lull turns, but those will endanger your placed cubes). Saving cubes for a rolled 1 is okay, even an effective 2 should be neutralized with Notoriety gain, but 3+ spell doom to your cubes.
The other trustworthy Notoriety blocker is the Monster design upgrade (an absolute must for the science/explorer motive (note: you don't have this upgrade automatically in the initial set when you play the explorer motive)). This great upgrade turns quite a few ships into attractive targets due to their 0-Notoriety effect. And Nemo needs a lot of ships for salvaging to gain more of the precious upgrades. Get them as quickly as possible, because only then you can exploit their benefits to the maximum extend possible.
The Fog Machine is a one-time big shot or the reason to shred your dice. Use this upgrade once you're close to space 44 (war and anti-imperialism), or when you have passed 15 Notoriety points (science or exploration).
Too bad, you do not have control over the Upgrade sets (and additions) offered to you for each game. But that's another challenge when you play NW.

Some other points of interest (maybe).
1 - Visit the Central Pacific and the Arctic Ocean frequently as they allow feeding ships sunk for tonnage to two different oceans each. This saves a bit of traveling and the maximum of ships present there is 2 or 1, respectively.
2 - Once the warships turned purple, avoid to start the Action phase in oceans containing warships. They will hunt you down.
3 - If possible, get the Steam Torpedoes as quickly as possible. But all other nine Upgrades are also high priority objectives ... This weapon system allows a free attack per turn, and it can kill the most dangerous adversaries without risk (you do not even gain Notoriety points in cases of a miss). But beware of that first fatal miss: The chance to hit a warship drops from 70% to 17%, in case of merchant ships from 80% to 33%. Save some "re-roll" or DRM options for your torpedoes.
So what are the disadvantages of the steam torpedoes? First, they are expensive (4 Salvage ships, or 3 if Nemo is lucky or invests a bit more than the standard refit effort). Buying them delays the improvement of the NAUTILUS II with any of the other upgrades. Owning this weapon system might turn you into a trigger-happy ship wrecker (this not only will soar your Notoriety score, but will also fill the oceans with more and more dangerous new ships). The first miss is only a matter of time, so use the torpedoes wisely.
4 - Regarding the sinking of ships (for either purpose) is a delicate objective (as are all other aspects of Nemo's campaigning). Maintain a good mix of warships and merchant ships in each ocean.

I hope this will be of some use.

Cheers
U.L.H.

Thank you for the tips, Uwe! I find them really useful, and so I hope to win my next game (this weekend, I suppose)...

Yes, this is very helpful. Now that I have the rules down, a little help in understanding strategy is exactly what I needed.

Thanks!
