I just bought this.

Given that I can only play this once: which would be the best experience?

1. Play with family of 6 (me: 48, wife: 47, kids: 14, 14, 13, 11) at cabin on a spooky fall night

2. Play on man weekend at cabin with 4 other 48 year olds?

Neither. This is solo game, 2-3 person at most.

I think it's better with 4 players than with 6 players. However, I also think it's better in the family setting...

Under given choices, I would advocate the second. Agree, that six would be too much. (Although, I would not recommend it solo either.) I think, 4 is fine. Also I had good experience playing this with other gamers, so no problem in that regard.

Skip options 1 and 2 and go for:

3. Play with your wife.
4. Play with your kids as a "Dungeon Master";
5. Hand t to your 4 friends play it;

Why I say this?

It is possible to play the game without actually destroying/modifying anything... and 5 is a big player count for this game, there isn't enough stuff to keep 5 people thinking/entertained all the time...

Personally I'm not a huge fan of the house rule to "play it without destruction". Yes, it should be possible with the Cabin more easily than with other games of the series, but beside the final score might drop, because you take a bit longer (which is a minor thing), I think, you would deprive yourself of part of the fun, if you are not playing it by the rules.
