People have asked previously about the "free" leads at the back of some of the cases in some of the editions of SHCD. See HERE, and HERE.

It appears the free leads are limited to the Ystari Editions of the game. They were not present in the original 1981 Sleuth Edition, and are not present in the new 2017 Space Cowboys Edition. I'm not even sure if they are present in the 2011 French Ystari Edition before it was translated into English in 2012.

The only thing I *am* certain of, is that they *are* present in my 2016-1 Ystari English copy of the game. And to avoid confusion, the full line above the barcode on that version's gamebox is 2016-1/SH01US/CHP001. The confusion occurs (see the first link above) because the same line on the new Space Cowboys Edition, which was released in *2017*, also starts with 2016-1. The full line on the new, 2017 Space Cowboys box is 2016-1/SCSHDC01US/LON001.

As an added point, you may come across prior forum posts discussing errata needed for the 2016-1 and earlier versions. Those refer to the 2016-1 Ystari Edition of the game, *not* the brand new 2016-1 Space Cowboys Edition.

To determine if your case does indeed have free leads, look on the very last page of the case booklet (the solution page). The top of the page lists a HOLMES section where the leads that Holmes followed are given. Below that is a SCORE section. If there is *any* text between the words "SCORE" and "Part One", you have one or more free leads in the case. If you find no text there, then there are no free leads.

So... most editions of the game don't make use of any of the Ystari "free" leads. But if you are using a different version of the game and want to use them when determining your score, here they are:

Case One: The Munitions Magnate
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Quote:
For this case, the leads at 47NW (Captain Egan's residence), 61EC (William Linhart's residence), 2SW (German Embassy). 34SW (Alexi Meshkoff's residence), 38SW (Spanish Embassy) and 59SW (French Embassy) are "free". Don't count them when totalling your score.

So six free leads in Case One. And yes, "totaling" was misspelled.

Case Two: The Tin Soldier
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Quote:

Case Two has *zero* free leads.

Case Three: The Mystified Murderess
Spoiler (click to reveal)

Case Three has *zero* free leads.

Case Four: The Lionized Lions

Case Four has *zero* free leads.

Case Five: The Cryptic Corpse

Case Five has *zero* free leads.

Case Six: The Mummy's Curse
Spoiler (click to reveal)

Case Six has *zero* free leads.

Case Seven: The Banker's Quietus
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Quote:
For this case, the lead at 37SE (Waterloo Station) is "free". Don't count it when totalling your score.

One free lead for Case Seven.

Case Eight: The Thames Murders
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Quote:

Case Eight has *zero* free leads.

Case Nine: The Solicitous Solicitor
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Quote:

Case Nine has *zero* free leads.

Case Ten: The Pilfered Paintings
Spoiler (click to reveal)
Quote:

Case Ten has *zero* free leads.

There you have it. All the free leads from the Ystari Edition (2016 printing at least).

Hope this helps.

[Edited to separate out each of the cases into individual Spoiler Tags.]
