This has been a bit of an epic in putting together, a bit like the novel it is based upon, but at last I've actually managed to finish off my custom War of the Ring boardgame pieces. Most of the strongholds purchased from Sickdave (on this site), as well as finishing those off with my own purchases and some mountain ranges. I've now also replaced the main characters and armies with painted miniatures using 28mm for the main characters (so they stand out) and 15/18mm for the regular, elite, and leader armies; which were far harder to source than I initially anticipated.
Finally though, my work is done - a mixture of my own painting, large scale commission (for the armies) and help from others with regard to the strongholds.
See what you think... And, who fancies nipping over to mine to play a campaign?
It was certainly a labour of love and it took me ages to source the right kind of miniatures for it. It is the anniversary edition but I really didn't like the quality of the pre-painted miniatures that came with it. The mountains were a bit of a fluke; they were part of a 3d puzzle of Middle-earth which I saw in a toy shop and just took a punt on. Really glad I did.
I already have the Lords and Warriors of Middle-earth expansions and I've used some of the figures out of those (Corsairs, Eagles and Ents as these were very difficult to find in a scale that could still fit on the board and those figures aren't too bad) and sourced others.
I'll have to post further pics of the different miniatures and when I play some pics of specific events in the game.
Sauron (really like the red eye motif on the shields):
Southrons and Easterlings (for these I went with cavalry instead of elephants purely because the latter were impossible to find in a style and size that worked and I've also included the miniature ships of the Corsairs found within one of the expansions for the game - I've used the figures from the game itself but painted them better):
Saruman (the white hand on the Uruk shields are pretty cool and I've also included the Dunlending forces from one of the expansions but with new miniatures):
And the giant spiders of Mirkwood:
For siege weapons the evil forces use Siege Towers:
Remember, these have 'leader' units. The ones with the banners. This caused me a bit of an issue with regard to the elves and men of the 'north'. Such units represent different nations so I picked some heraldry that doesn't really have a strong basis in any of Tolkien's work but still felt okay. Rohan and Gondor were fine though.
Gondor (gorgeous heraldry on these):
Rohan (same for Rohan; the flags are awesome):
Men of the North (I was tempted to go with a 'wolf' motif in homage to the Starks of Westeros but thought that was going a little too far!):
Elves (slight disparity in the scale of the 'leader' units but elves we sooooo hard to source in this scale):
The Dead of Dunharrow:
Ent (not a great fan of these figures from the actual expansion but there were no better at a usuable scale):
Great Eagle (these were just repainted but are from the expansion box; quite like these):
