BSG V149 - Universal Motives

This is a 6-player, All-Expansions game to Earth, with Conflicted Loyalties.

This is a variant to attempt to replicate the idea of the Sympathetic Cylon (anyone could become a Cylon Leader halfway through the game) for Daybreak. The idea has been explored before; this is my attempt to flesh it out a bit.

Basically, everyone gets 2 Motives at the start, and an "Infiltrator" card is shuffled in after the first Loyalties are dealt out. If you get it at Sleeper, you draw 2 more Motives and are now a Cylon Leader. Unlike the Sympathetic Cylon, you have the option to stay infiltrated (though you still have to discard down), and you still have a (reduced) skill set and abilities.

Basic Rules

This is a 6-player game. By the end of the game, there should be 2 Cylons, 3 Humans, and 1 Cylon Leader.

At Game Start:
- Build a Loyalty Deck comprising of 2 "You Are A Cylon" cards and 9 "You Are Not A Cylon" cards, for a total of 11. (Add 1, as usual, for each of Baltar and Boomer).
- Deal out Loyalty cards as normal (1 extra for Baltar).
- Shuffle the "Infiltrator" card from Daybreak into the Loyalty deck.
- Deal 2 Motive cards to each player (leaving 2 in the deck).

(For a 4-player game, use 1 YAAC and 6 YANACs. I'm sure this could be adapted to a 5- or 7-player game with the Mutineer in play, but that could get messy.)

At Sleeper:
- Deal everyone another Loyalty (1 extra for Baltar).
- Revealed Cylons pass this new Loyalty to a Human of their choice, as per usual Daybreak rules.
- When a Human receives the Infiltrator card, they immediately reveal it.
- They draw 2 cards from the Motive deck, giving them a total of 4 Motives.
- They discard down to 3 skill cards.
- They pass their remaining Loyalty cards to a Human player of their choice.
- They give all titles they have to the eligible player highest on the appropriate succession list; if they are Vice President, they discard that card.
- They may deinfiltrate for free at this time. Note that unlike the Sympathetic Cylon, this is optional, and they may stay infiltrated if desired.

The player who received the "Infiltrator" card is now considered a Cylon Leader, following usual Daybreak rules. They win if, at the end of the game, they have revealed at least 3 motives, at least 2 of which are aligned with the winning team.

A player who becomes a Cylon Leader keeps their character sheet. Their skill set is adjusted down to 2 skill cards; a full list of the new skill sets is provided below. They still have and can use abilities on their character sheets, even when not infiltrated. Some are modified, see below.

Players may reveal Motives before Sleeper; if they later become a Cylon Leader, any motives they revealed before sleeper count as completed Motives. Any Motives other players revealed do not count.

If you do not become a Cylon Leader, you may ignore your Motives (and you may not reveal them); your sole objective is to win with your team.

If a player reveals as a Cylon before sleeper, and has not revealed any Motives, they may choose to reshuffle both of their unrevealed Motives back into the Motive deck.

The "0 Piloting" and "0 Leadership" means those colors are considered to be in their skill set, but they don't automatically get that draw. They can draw that color as part of their extra skill draw when infiltrating, when using the Human Fleet to scout, or from any other effect that instructs them to draw cards. Characters with "0 Piloting" may launch and pilot Vipers.

Modified/Clarified Abilities

The following abilities are modified for Cylon Leaders only:

Baltar's Delusional Intuition: May also be used when he plays a Crisis from Caprica (1 skill card only).
Baltar's Coward: Now Reads: Baltar does not draw an extra skill card when infiltrating.

Boomer's Sleeper Agent: In addition to being moved to the Brig, she may not deinfiltrate for free when she receives the Infiltrator card.
Boomer's Mysterious Intuition: You may only use this ability when infiltrating.

Roslin's Religious Visions: May also be used on Caprica; draw 3 Crises and choose 1 to resolve.
Roslin's Terminal Illness: The cost to activate a location is reduced to 1 for Caprica and 0 for all other Cylon Locations.

Dee's Emotionally Fragile: You are still executed even if you are not infiltrating.

Ellen's Manipulative: You may become President (but not Admiral) if you are not infiltrated.

Kat's Stim Junkie: If this triggers while you are on a Cylon Location, you must discard down to 3 cards and you are moved to the Resurrection Ship.

Cally's Discharge of a Firearm: You may use this on revealed Cylons.
Cally's Impulsive: If you are not infiltrating, you must play at least 1 skill card into every skill check while you have more than 4 skill cards in hand.

Gaeta's FTL Operator: You may not use this ability unless you are infiltrating.
Gaeta's Coup: Now reads: Once per game, you may give the Admiral title to a player of your choice. If you are in the Brig when you move the title, move immediately to Command.
Gaeta's Misguided: Now reads: You must discard a card to play a second card into a skill check.

Tory's Adaptable: You may only use this ability to draw from within your skill set.

Hoshi's Organized: If you are not infiltrating, you may use this ability to activate two different Cylon locations.

Hot Dog's Memento: You do not benefit from this ability if you are on the Cylon Fleet location.

Lampkin's Kleptomania: If you are not infiltrating, discard only 1 card for this drawback; if you cannot, there is no effect.

Gaius' Spiritual Crisis: You may not deinfiltrate (including when you first receive the Infiltrator card) unless you are in the Brig or are executed.

Lee's Choose a Different Path: If you use this ability from Caprica, you may not ignore the discards.

Karl's Family Commitments: If you are not infiltrating and have at least 1 skill card, instead of drawing 1 fewer card, discard 1 random skill card, then draw an extra card during your Receive Skills step.

Tom's Abuse Power: Peaceful Resistance and Selfish Act are considered unplayable from Cylon Locations.

Note that some of these may still not be the most balanced, but I'm not striving for perfect balance here. That said, none of these are set in stone, and let me know if any look particularly egregious, or if you have cool ideas for any of them (particularly ones like Baltar and Gaeta that required large changes).

The following abilities are modified even before Sleeper:

Helo's Stranded: Your character is placed on Caprica at the start of the game (you are still considered a Human). While you are on Caprica, skip your Movement step, and you may not be moved, be targeted with Executive Order, or use any Action apart from activating Caprica. At the start of a turn on Caprica, you may choose one of two options:
1) Receive Skills from your normal skill set (5 cards). Skip your Action step. At the beginning of your next turn, you are moved to the Hangar Deck.
2) Receive Skills from your Cylon Leader skill set (2 cards). Give all titles you have to the player (apart from yourself) highest on the succession list. Skip your Activate Cylon Ships step.
If you are still on Caprica at Sleeper:
- If you receive the Infiltrator card: Do not discard down to 3 skill cards. Remain on Caprica; you are not considered to be infiltrating.
- If you do not receive the Infiltrator card: You are moved to the Hangar Deck.

Zarek's Friends in Low Places: In addition to its effect for the Brig, activating Administration may not send you to the Brig (you must still discard down to 1 Mutiny). If you would lose the President title via Administration and you are not in the Brig, you may draw a Mutiny (sending yourself to the Brig) to keep it.

Exodus

With Exodus in play, include an extra YANAC at the start of the game.

If you are executed, you keep your Motives, even if you become a new character at that time.

If you draw the Infiltrator card before Sleeper, you become a Cylon Leader at that time, following the procedure above.
- If you are Boomer, you are moved to the Brig immediately, and cannot deinfiltrate for free.
- If Helo is on Caprica, follow the instructions in his drawback as if it were sleeper.
- At sleeper phase, you receive your 2 remaining Motives as well as a Loyalty card (2 if Boomer); you pass this (these) Loyalty cards to a Human player of your choice.

(This scenario is also possible in Pegasus without Exodus, if Boomer is executed before sleeper. In this case, follow the same procedure.)

If the Infiltrator card does is not revealed at Sleeper and there is 1 card left in the Loyalty Deck, the current player chooses one player to draw the last Loyalty card (which will be the Infiltrator card). Do not do this if there are two cards left in the Loyalty deck (which should only happen if Boomer reveals before sleeper); in this rare case, it is possible that the Infiltrator card may come out later. Follow the same procedure as normal, though you do not pass any remaining Loyalty cards off if Distance is 7 or more.

In the exceedingly unlikely event you are a Cylon Leader with Loyalty cards, these may be inspected. They are not revealed if you are executed. You may not use a "You Are a Cylon" card to reveal as a Cylon. You may use the actions on Personal Goals. If you are infiltrating at the end of the game, the Humans do lose resources from any Personal Goals you have in hand.

Final Fives

If you receive the Infiltrator card (as a Human) and at some earlier point in the game you were executed and revealed a Final Five card, you may immediately choose to play as that executed character instead of your current one. If you do so:

- Draw 2 new Motives.
- Discard all your skill cards.
- Pass any remaining Loyalty cards to a Human player of your choice.
- Pass all titles and discard any attached Quorum cards.
- Discard all Mutinies and Miracle Tokens you have.
- Remove your current character from the game, and place your new character on the Resurrection Ship.
- If Morale was lost when your new character was executed, the Humans gain 1 Morale.

If you're interested in playing, let me know in the game thread or by GM! I reserve the right to reserve some spots for folks who have previously expressed an interest in this idea.

I'll let the players decide the Destination, and whether they want to use Pegasus / Exodus / CFB / Final Fives. Personal Goals don't seem like a good mix for this game.

EDIT: Some alternate directions I don't want to take this game, but could be interesting food for thought later:

- A Season 3 version of Baltar, who gets to run around Cylon Locations pre-sleeper.

- Swapping Cally's Tactics draw for Politics, or Hot Dog's Tactics draw for Engineering.

- Letting a character effectively ignore the Infiltrator card for gameplay purposes, but not for their victory conditions. That is, they keep playing as a Human with a full 5-skill card draw, but they win based off of their Motives. The catch is that they don't get to look at the Motives they receive after sleeper. (You may "reveal as a Cylon" if you're in the Brig or are executed, in which case you behave like a normal Cylon instead. If one of your hidden motives could have been revealed between Sleeper and the end of the game if only you'd been able to see what it was, you can reveal it at the end of the game even if its conditions are not met presently.) This would work best for Gaeta (whose abilities as printed don't mesh well with being a CL) or Tigh (for thematic reasons).

- Letting people play with 5-card versions of CLs to start. They are swapped out for their normal version if they become a CL.

Six's Conflicted Loyalties: Now "Mistaken Identity": You start the game in the Brig.

D'Anna needs to be entirely rewritten.

Doral's Industrious: Now reads: Your skill set has 6 cards.
Doral's Meticulous: Switched out for ?

Simon's Calculating: Switched out for ?

A Seven-Player Variant

Build a Loyalty Deck consisting of:
2 "You Are a Cylon" cards
11 "You Are Not a Cylon" cards
1 "You Are a Mutineer" card
+1 each for Boomer, Baltar, Exodus.

Loyalty gets dealt as usual at the beginning of the game; if anyone receives the Mutineer card at this time, they draw an additional Loyalty card.

After the initial Loyalties are dealt out, shuffle the "You are Infiltrating" card into the Loyalty deck. This means there should now be 8 cards in the Loyalty deck (+1 each for Boomer, Exodus), or 7 cards if the Mutineer has already appeared.

At sleeper, everyone gets their additional Loyalty. Any revealed Cylons pass their new Loyalties off to a Human player of their choice. If you draw the "You are Infiltrating" card, you reveal it as per the usual rules. If someone draws or receives the Mutineer, they reveal it and draw an additional Loyalty.

If you are the Mutineer and receive the Infiltrator, pass the Mutineer card to a Human of your choice; it does not have to be the same person who receives your other Loyalties.

If, after all this, the Mutineer card has not been revealed, the current player designates someone to draw another Loyalty card. If that results in that player becoming the Mutineer, they do not draw an additional Loyalty card after that.

If, after all that, the Infiltrator card has not been revealed, the current player designates someone to draw another Loyalty card.

(All of this should mean that the Infiltrator should come out unless Boomer revealed pre-sleeper with Exodus in play, but it's possible that the Mutineer could end up as the last card of the deck in Exodus.)

When the Infiltrator card comes out, everyone who is not the Infiltrator discards their unrevealed Motives facedown to form a new Motive pile. The Infiltrator shuffles this pile and draws their 2 post-sleeper Motives from it.

I don't much care for the revised skill draws and abilities upon receiving the Infiltrator card. If you're having trouble with those, the easiest fix for now would be simply to have the player choose a Cylon Leader character and switch to that character, with OPG available if it had not been used.

I do however think that the main concept behind this variant is fantastic and the best Personal Goal-like variant I have come across.

That's 5 so far, and I've got one invite outstanding. If that invite is declined, we'd have room for one more; let me know in thread or by GM if you're interested!

For the 5 confirmed so far, feel free to vote in these polls:

Obviously, CFB and Final Fives will only be included if we use Exodus. If we go with Exodus but no CFB, I'll do my usual trick of leaving 34 non-CAC crises in the game box before we begin, and putting Civilians in Sectors 5 and 6 for the Ionian Battle (if present).

Okay, so it looks like we're going to use Pegasus, Exodus, and Final Fives, and we're going to Earth.

We won't be using the Cylon Fleet Board, so I will be removing 34 non-CAC cards from the Crisis deck at random before we begin (and returning them to the game box face-down).

Player order:
KraZug 1d100 = (50) = 50. 1d100 = (48) = 48
Flamethrower49 1d100 = (5) = 5
j1234j1234 1d100 = (83) = 83
rdonoso 1d100 = (50) = 50. 1d100 = (47) = 47
Mr T 1977 1d100 = (91) = 91
bender418 1d100 = (80) = 80

Mr T 1977 is up first! You may pick any character from any expansion, except a Cylon Leader.
