Had a few games on Saturday and tired using Vortex Missiles on a square containing a Cruiser and Frigate.

So I know Cruisers are the preferred target in a normal attack but what about a special attack?

We played it should but I would like clarification if we are right.

How I read it:

Cruisers can choose to be the target of any attack in an area, if they wish so, due to their Depolarized shields (rules page 19).

But the special weapons rules (p. 22, 1st sentence) say that no shield or reaction can be used against a special weapon, unless specified otherwise.
Since the Cruisers' Depolarized shields are basically shields, I'd say they're ineffective against Special Weapons. So a cruiser can't reassign a Vortex missile's target.

PS:
Got confirmation from the game designer on Fleet Commander forum.
Special weapons override ships' special abilities. So a Cuiser cannot reassign a Vortex missile attack.
