A couple of days ago we played a game of Kemet where everyone after battles recalled their troops as to not open possibilities for attack for other players. Game was a slog, and nobody was happy. Did we overlook a rule or pitfall?

Though you have the opportunity to recall your troops, you do miss out on the potential points for holding temples at the end of the round (you need to be controlling the temple to keep the temporary victory point). Also if you manage to hold 2 temple at the end of the round, you get a permanent VP. Thus, if you control two temples at the end of the round, you will have earned 37.5% of the required VP to win the game. If others are recalling troops, it is beneficial to keep your troops out there (especially if you are last in the turn order.

In addition, players who recall their troops will be missing out on the prayer point generation from the temples during the night phase. Would you want a slow economy of 2PP per night phase, or a whopping 2PP + 2PP + 3PP from temples? That is plenty extra to recruit and move more reinforcements into your temple.

This would depend on how many units were recalled, since the player gets 1 PP for each unit recalled. I guess the counter to this though is that the temples provide free PP, where as the prayer points you get from recalling a unit will be spent in recruitment of the unit. Having to re-recruit these units also wastes an action that could have been better served elsewhere (e.g. getting def buffs from your pyramids to support the units at the temples).

But suppose I fight a battle and are left with 3 troops and creature. I won't win any other fight.

I am not sure why you think you would not win any fights after that. Since there is a max army size (5 unless you have a "tech" to increase and a limit of 1 creature to an army, its not like you are that far back. Also their are "techs" that you can get, either attack or defense, plus the use of DI cards that can help you win. Finally, you can always reinforce your army in a couple of actions if necessary. Having three left & a creature really is not that bad of a spot to be in.
