that makes a great job helping us to do the best in the last game laugh

as the last game, i´ll setup the board and dropbox... there will be a PDF file with random generated factions... going in this way will be more exciting to ALL and i think improve the learning curve...

stay tuned!!!

Are we using Volko's variant cards? For the long game, LRRP really needs to be nerfed.

Mark and Volko (the game designers) reevaluated the power of some of the cards and found these 3 to be off kilter.

LRRP as it stands can completely shut down the NVA in the initial part of the game if drawn early (destroying all of the NVA starting bases in Laos/Cambodia and reducing the Trail to zero if drawn as an opening card).

USS New Jersey is overpowered but not near as bad as LRRP

M48 shaded is underpowered, so they suggested beefing it up.

Here are their proposed revisions:

M-48 Patton
US CAPABILITY
Armored Punch: 2 non-Lowland US Assault spaces each remove 2 extra enemy pieces.
RPGs: After US/ARVN Patrol, NVA removes up to 2 cubes that moved (US to Casualties).

LRRP
Long Range Recon Patrol: US places 3 Irregulars outside the South then free Air Strikes.
Patrols ambushed: 3 Irregulars map to Casualties. Shift each space they were in 1 level toward Active Opposition.

USS New Jersey
Fire support: US or ARVN free Air Strikes any 1-3 coastal spaces, removing up to 3 pieces per space (no effect on Trail).
Frightening free fire: Shift 2 coastal Provinces with US Troops each 2 levels toward Active Opposition.

There are some additional variant rules for play balance and to eliminate gameyness in tournaments, which we probably don't need to explore right now.

The original thread is:

Everyone, let me know one way or another if we should use the revised text of the cards, so that I can start the game.

I prefer them, but if anyone objects, we will use the cards as written.

Most likely these will be the text on the next printing of the game.

Then if no objections, let's nerf LRRP and USS New Jersey.

M48 is underpowered, but an underpowered card is not as big of a problem as overpowered ones, and being a capability, it would be something that would be persistent that everyone would have to remember.

I will start the game today.

at dropbox page, the left column has a files link... click on it!!! this will show you as a explorer interface, showing folders and files (and not showing deleted files or folders)...

normally dropbox access a home index page showing the last files updated or deleted....

I created a NEW folder... FiTL - FULL SCENARIO to upload all files (including setup and pdf file with faction/player information).

Aren't you the RVN (Republic of Vietnam)?

RVN was the Saigon based government. The North would be the DRV (Democratic Republic of Vietnam), the PAVN (People's Army of Vietnam) or the commonly used NVA (North Vietnamese Army).

If you want some interesting perspective on US operations and how US strategy evolved, I highly recommend Lewis Sorley's "A Better War".

For a good primer on COIN strategies, David Galula's "Counterinsurgency Warfare: Theory and Practice" is a great resource. It was published in 1964, so it gives an interesting look at what was going on at the time from the lense of the Algerian War, and gives excellent insight into Maoist and Bourgeois-Nationalist revolutionary doctrine.
