Honestly: They've got expensive space. They have high prices. There's hardly ever anyone in the store when I walk by.

Shouldn't you post this in the Minnesota forum, if anywhere at all?

They must be making their money somewhere, or they would have closed by now. I'm not familiar with the chain, but it looks like they have seven stores with a wide selection of games and a packed events calendar.

I have been to game stores that price far over MSRP and are somehow still in business. Probably because some poor, ignorant souls actually buy their overpriced games. whistle

I'll add a few more comments.

1. They also sell puzzles, chess sets (most FLGS don't carry themed chess sets), darts, fidget spinners and other toy gadgets. People buy a lot of that stuff.

2. It's convenient. A lot of foot traffic at a mall. Need a quick gift? It's easy to swing by GbJ. Sure MSRP might be "high" to some, but you are paying for convenience.

3. Games by James is becoming more of a FLGS than just a chain store that happens to carry games. They run events regularly (as I mentioned above) and events are what carries the game store. Especially Magic events. Like most game stores, I'm sure they are kept a float by Magic. Also, some of the employees are avid gamers and know quite a bit about games. NOT ALL... but some do and they are helpful.

4. They have a rewards program when you buy stuff you get points which you can then redeem for store credit. Honestly I don't buy much there, but they will have promotions to give you free points. I've earned about $40 in free credit over the past 5 years. Those promotions keep me coming back to their store and every now and then I do buy something.

Wasn't aware they were Minnesota only. When I see a chain, I assume it's more than just here.

That's a REALLY weird assumption to make.

Apparently not, because as stated in this thread they used to also be in Iowa. Oh, and they are also in Wisconsin.

Well, I've always lived by the mantra: If you want to own a games store, you should probably win the lotto first.

Maybe they won the lotto.

The one in Lacrosse closed awhile back, I stopped there occasionally and picked up a few things. They were always friendly to me, but when I sent a buddy and his girlfriend there they told me they were ignored while worker played Magic the Gathering with friends. Not surprised they closed after hearing this.

Great sample size of one chain there...

As far as chain stores go... there are discussions of deals at other chain stores that don't span the country. I see this discussion just as relevant.

The only current location in WI is in Eau Claire. It was a larger chain back in the 70s/80s but expanded too fast to sustain itself. A few of the local owners bought the rights to their stores and kept them going; and now it's just one family that owns the remaining stores.

I worked for them for about a year before moving. Magic sales definitely helped, as well as the rewards programs and deals they ran through it. Events helped as well, although they've really stepped up the number of events they host since I worked there (4ish years ago).

The great thing about assumptions is they even work with sample size 0.
