I figured I'd start this thread based on what I thought this thread was asking:

Top 10 games...WITHOUT expansions.

So? What do you think? What are the best games that have been around a while (3 years or more) and never got expansions?

Pete (doesn't start off with a list)

Twilight Struggle Unless you count those little promo things like Day zero and the bonus cards as expansions.

Bloc by Bloc: The Insurrection Game I doubt anyone else will agree with me. But this game was brilliant, no promos or expansions of any kind either

Paths of Glory This one didn't get expansions, but it got "zoom in games" like Pursuit of Glory

Battle Line
Nexus Ops

Tales of the Arabian Nights
Mechs vs. Minions (less than 3 years old, but the publisher has stated that they do not plan expansions)
Tigris & Euphrates (turns out it has an expansion)
Blueprints

This is actually harder than I expected it to be without bringing up a bunch of games that are 1-2 years old and don't have expansions... yet?

More like promos versus actual expansions. Caverna is suppose to be getting one.

You could argue that Battle Line is an expansion of the original Schotten Totten, since it includes tactics cards that the original printing of ST did not.

I should add that qualifier to the original post.

Pete (agrees that if its under 3 years old the expansion may still be coming)

My understanding of an "expansion" was that it contained gameplay elements designed to be integrated into an original game. I understand Battle Line to be more of a "reimplementation", since it constitutes a self-contained game and the Battle Line tactics are not designed to be integrated with Schotten Totten, especially since they would not be functionally identical in that game. The BGG classification seems to reflect my understanding, but I realize that, as you say, all of these notions can be subject to debate.

Filthy Rich. An absolutely brilliant game for which an expansion was apparently designed, but shelved when The Hasborg absorbed WotC.

The Capitals. The designer had an expansion in the works 3-4 years ago, but the publisher didn't think the base game had sold enough.

Guillotine

Magic Realm

Goa

Acquire... but of course, what does one do with perfection?

I agree that Battle Line is definitely a reimplementation, but the tactics that it introduced were then put into later editions of Schotten Totten as well.

Acquire has gone 55 years without one.

El Grande has several, but no one has opted to play them.

Stunningly good games.
