. Hope you have a great week, and enjoy Essen!
About Marlon: I was totally surprised and more than honored Jenn contacted me about the GOTW! Never had I imagined someone would consider me for such a cool title!
Born and raised near the peace and political capital of the Netherlands, The Hague, my first steps into gaming were through an amazing guy called Jeroen Keijzer. He introduced me to Dungeon & Dragons and in its slipstream, we played the heck out of games like Heroquest, Risk and many other miniature games. Every Christmas I knew what was waiting under the Christmas tree, another board game to unwrap and explore with my friends.

Between my teens and twenties, I drifted away from gaming and went the sports way. Fantasy novels, history stuff, and biographies always stayed part of my life, but board games were replaced by video games or sports. It may or may not involved some drinking too at the weekends and I lived on other priorities ;-)

When the sports page was turned, and I became a dad, the board game passion re-entered my life. After playing some of the usual suspects like Catan or Risk, it was Pandemic Legacy last year which enlighten the fire again for modern board games. After that, I went headfirst down the rabbit hole and bought all of the games. I watched every Rahdo's run-through, all Dice Tower top 10's and even became a proud patreon of the Heavy cardboard podcast & youtube. I discovered so many great people were part of this hobby, I just needed to be part of this wonderful hobby full force. Met so many beautiful people....heart

I think myself an omnigamer, but do trend towards the heavier thematic games the last few months. But most importantly, I want to play games the people around me enjoy just as much because the people are making the best experiences. So I play it all and love it!

At Spiel 2016 I had my first big fair experience and I met someone near and dear to my heart, Steph! (punkin312) and her husband now, Ron. They made my experience so incredibly special and I am proud to call them my friends now.

I want to thank you all for reading my rambling. I hope to meet all of you at one of the cons in Europe and maybe one day in America. Bucket list!

Jenn again, thanks for your invite! You made my day!
(will be attending Essen Spiel this week, so I will try and get your question answered, but not sure when that happens)

Have a wizard of a week!

My usual question: Have you a favorite wizardly type? If so, who? If not, why? And which game (if any) is he/she from?

may I make a suggestion Marlon that when you pass the torch next week to go back to the long running poll format of a single 3 exclusive choice format... the format for this one and the last one allow folks to hedge their bets and vote true or false on all 3 imho ymmv

Congratulations on making Geek of the Week!

I have a few questions for you......
1 What is your opinion of war gaming?
2 Do you have a favorite war game; if so, what is it?
3 What are your opinions or memories of playing Risk?
4 What are your opinions or memories of playing Axis & Allies?
5 What game would you tell all gamers about that just has no publicity and that nobody knows about?
6 What game reminds you most of playing Association (Soccer) Football?

I thank you for your time. thumbsup cool

Hey Doug, great question and yes I do have an answer

Have been playing d&d for years and in of my latest campaigns I finally played my first wizard. A knowledge hunger human who was searching for a lost shrine and in the process tried to guide his party the right way. (a immense task with those pesky dwarfs....)

He was a tremendous pain in the b*tt on his party with all his fancy words and mostly went on his own, because he needed to do things...but he did aid in defeating the dragon with some of his big spells just in time, so they loved him for that. Maybe he reminds you of a little of a famous wizard?

So yes, he was loosely based on Gandalf, one of my favorite wizards around, being a young padawan still ;-)

Fun question and one I needed to think on a little.
Shall I answer it with a fantasy option or should I pick a real spaceship?

I do love space and I have visited Cape Canaveral at Florida once.
That was mighty impressive and made my respect for space endeavours even bigger. But to be fair, I couldn't name a ship (or shuttle) which I like the most.

But if I am thinking space and thinking of a memorable ship, the first word that comes to mind is the millennium falcon. So as a big Star Wars fan, I couldn't pick anything else. I love the pirate way of life it radiates and it's always on the brink of being broken, but still saves the day every single time.

Thanks for your questions!

1 I love me a good wargame and especially ones based on real event around WOII, The Birth of America, Roman era, etc. I do see a tendency of liking them more last few months.
2 Not really have one clear favorite, but I like the light wargame series from Academy Games, The Birth of America. I also like CDGs like Twilight Struggle, but that may not be within the definition of wargames, but the subject matter is very interesting to me.
3 Hoarding stuff on different places and marching them onto your enemies. Played that a lot on the camping site I resided with my family during the summer weeks, back in the days. So the smell of that is a pleasant memory which comes to mind.
4 Never played it, but I do remember that it has always been one of my grail games to get for christmas. That never happened, but like to play it someday though.
5 Well, to keep it wargame related, Supply Lines of the American Revolution is something which, at least in Europe, don't gets the buzz. (Hollandspiele is hard to acquire, so I would say all of their games are unique and opaque options I would recommend if you want something different)
6 Good question and one I don't have a clear answer for, besides obvious choices which are football manager games. Will try and think a little longer on it, will be back...
