If for ex. 2 U-Boats attack a convoy with 3 escorts.

1) Both U-Boats have fired Torpedos, so I place 2 "Alerted" counters. Thereby increasing the search range of the escorts in the next phase. Correct?

2) Now in the next Combat Phase, the first escort detects one U-Boat. That one is detected for the other two as well.

Do the other two escorts move then towards the detected one? Or do they first roll to see, if they detect the other one and then move towards the closest or random one?

1) Yes that is how Alerted counters work.

I find that as written they tend to be a bit oppressive. With that in mind I play with a couple modified house rules:
-Only 1 Alerted counter per turn from attacks
-First counter doubles detection range, and each additional counter only gives a bonus to the role.

These are mostly to prevent ships that you haven't identified yet having the possibility of detecting you. Or detecting you from all the way across the board.

2)Yes, once a U-Boat is detected by one escort, it is detected by all escorts. You do all your detection roles before any escorts move. The rules state that escorts move towards a random detected U-Boat, but it would make sense that they would choose the closest one if given the option.
