...and I just had to post about it!

I'm extremely excited to try the game! The folding boards are wondrous things. I tested it out at the booth, and just couldn't stop flipping those sides! The game looks gorgeous, and the components are fantastic. I love the idea of following with a meeple, and using specialist meeples to get more goods.

The reason I just had to post about it, though, is that I met Richard Breese, and he is such a genuinely kind person! He signed our copy, spent several minutes with us discussing the game flow, how he came up with the idea for the folding boards, how he started with the Key theme, and even talked to us about his favorite way to play Keyflower (with The Merchants....we own it but haven't incorporated it into our games yet. I'm looking forward to trying it out soon!). It felt awesome to not only pick up this special game, but to also have a moment to connect with the designer.

Richard - Thank you! We can't wait to play Keyper! The plastic is off already, so while it was supposed to be my birthday gift in December, it looks like we won't be able to wait that long.

I had a surprise encounter with Richard earlier this year on a bus ride to Toronto with a bunch of gamers. I didn't know it was him I just saw a guy asking about the game stores and such and I had a google map with the game stores flagged as I was planning on visiting them and showed it to him and gave directions, he had some great stories about some past conventions. He was nice and humble and didn't name drop when he certainly could have but I saw his name on the convention badge and said that sounds familiar and looked it up on the geek and was like holy @$@! The sad thing was it was Good Friday which is barely noticed in the states but is a big deal in Canada and all the game stores ended up being closed, doh

Nice story! Too bad the stores were closed, but nice that you helped him anyway!

Lovely! I met Richard briefly a couple of years at Essen and he is indeed a top fellow - friendly, humble and, as you said, at pains to take the time to chat with anyone visiting his booth.
I got my copy of Keyper last week (sadly NOT at Spiel) and can honestly say I haven’t been this excited at the potential offered by a new game in quite some time - eagerly awaiting the chance to play at the first possible opportunity.
And, given you have a signed copy AND spoke with the designer - it would be positively rude to wait until December to try it! Haha!

After hearing about Keyflower with The Merchants, I really want to play with that expansion...but, I also want to play Keyper! And with a super-busy schedule this month, and my visit back to the U.S. to see my family in December, I'm getting anxious that we won't get to play them both soon!! I kind of want to schedule several plays on the calendar!

I'm hoping a rules video will come out...my husband prefers learning games from videos as opposed to the rule book or from me, so a good rules video will help me make my dreams of playing Keyper this week happen!!

I tend to learn better from the rule book (and Richard's rule books are generally very clear and comprehensive in my experience), but there's a lot going on in this game so agree that a good video would be very helpful!

If the game lives up to my expectations I'll also be hoping for a nice insert - keep all those tiles and components organised and facilitate frequent plays.

I'm not known for writing short rule books so I understand your wish for a rules video. Paul Grogan at Gamimg Rules has agreed to produce a video, but he is a busy man so I think his video will not happen until Spring.

Thanks all in this thread for your kind comments.

Thanks, Richard! He is just as excited to play the game as I am, so maybe he will agree to learn from the rule book with me. If not, we can always play Keyflower with The Merchants while we wait. Paul Grogan makes fantastic tutorial videos, so great choice!

Paul should just start teaching 3 or 4 games simultaneously on his videos. He could set up different cameras so when he's looking at the "Keyper" angle, you know you should pay attention. Plus, he could star wipe between angle changes!

My wife and me took the same ferry back to UK yesterday (Monday after Essen) than Richard and his friend Tony Ross. I approached Richard to ask for an autograph in my Keyflower box (which I brought from home to play with friends). Unfortunately the access to the cars was already closed, but Richards invited us to join them for a game of Loot Island. Richard read through the rules as it was the first time everyone played. Richard and Tony were really nice and my wife and me had a great time. The ferry was already docked when we played through the last round and counted the victory points quickest as we could, and had to rush to the cars just before the ship unloaded. In that last moment Richard and Tony were so kind to give away us the game. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget.

Thank you Richard and Tony.

Hello Jaime, We both enjoyed your wife's and your company and thanks for sharing your journey. You are being polite, as you omitted to mention that you deservedly won the game also! I hope you get to enjoy Loot Island again. It was a good game but with so many more to play I think you will get it to the table more than I could. Have a great year and I hope you get to enjoy Keyper in the near future. Best wishes, Richard
