Because it is so easy for lieutenants to avoid attacks, stall, move behind the ship, and wave goodbye to the Revenge as it sails away, we came up with a variant that forces a weak lieutenant to flee. It uses 3 rules.
- - - - - - - - - - -
1. At the end of every round (before wind and current are applied), if the lieutenant or a tentacle is not aboard or adjacent to the Revenge, place 1 fatigue token on the lieutenant card.

2. Remove 1 fatigue token, to a minimum of 0, each time one of the following occurs.

a) A lieutenant attacks or Constricts a hero and does not miss.
b) A tentacle Constricts or pulls a hero.
c) The Siren successfully calls a hero to Run.

3. If the Revenge makes it off the opposite edge of the map, the encounter ends in a lieutenant flight if there are 1 or more fatigue tokens on the lieutenant card. Otherwise, the encounter ends in a party flight.

The effect of this variant is to force lieutenants to actively participate in the battle or else flee. If the lieutenant is actually fighting hard (0 fatigue), the heroes flee if they cross the map. Otherwise, if the lieutenant is stalling (1+ fatigue) it counts as a lieutenant flight.

In this variant, lieutenants can flee off any map edge, as per original rules and not errata.

As always, comments welcome. Thank you for reading.
