At this point Alice had to go, as did Leann. And unfortunately, Fritz and Sandra had to leave as well. That left five of us to continue the evening, if we wanted to. Well, we did. Sterling brought out his copy of El Grande, and we played that.

Dave took advantage of an early special scoring action to take a pretty big early lead. This firmly affixed a target to his back, which the other players, notably Rich and Sterling, hit. Still, after the first scoring round, Dave held the lead, though he led Rich by only one point.

A special scoring early in the second phase brought Sterling up with the leaders. But it was in the middle of the second phase that the turning point occurred: Ed was able to use an action that forced the other players to send their caballeros that were in their courts back to the provinces. That significantly slowed down everyone else, and allowed Ed to get significant momentum in a number of provinces. As a result, after the sixth round, when the second scoring took place, Ed shot to the lead, eight points ahead of Dave and fifteen ahead of Sterling.

In the third phase everyone else tried to rein in Ed. Dave was able to lock in his position in Old Castile, but Ed was there, in second place. Jim made a major claim to Aragon, pushing Ed to third in that region. But ultimately it wasn't enough, as after the final scoring Ed had a total of 98 points, which put him two ahead of Dave and six ahead of Sterling, and gave him the win.
