Dear D-Day Dicers,

Welcome to our first sneek peak at War Stories, an expansion that has been 5 years in the making... Let's hope it was worth it!

As our Kickstarter for D-Day Dice (Second edition) launches on November 11th, I will now share with you some of our new cards, courtesy of our ogre artist, Dominik Kasprzycki, and his handlers at Word Forge Games.

The Kickstarter will include the base game and War Stories (and more, if we reach certain stretch goals).

For those of you who wish to know more about D-Day Dice: 2nd Edition components, here's what you've been missing:
#1 - Regular Items
#2 - Special Items
#3 - Regular & Reserve Specialists
#4 - Ranking & Unique Specialists
#5 - Battle Maps

As some of you know, War Stories will contain 4 modules that you can use individually or all at the same time, for some extra fun. Today, we start with the Legendary Units. I've waited years to share them! The box will include 12, all taken from the pages of history, from the US 1st Infantry Division to Canada's Régiment de la Chaudière and the British No. 4 Commandos. I wanted to include the Knights Who Say Ni but Word Forge Games vetoed it.

A Legendary Unit consists of 7 cards, all linked together. The one shown here is the much-revered US 101st Airborne Division, seen in the Band of Brothers TV series. Fun (and true) historical note: during the Vietnam War, the Viet Cong were afraid of the men of the 101st, but had never seen an American bald eagle (featured on their iconic shoulder patch). They nicknamed these elite soldiers the "chicken men".

So let's go over the 7 cards contained in the Chicken Unit:

First, on the left, we have the title card, which gives you its name, country of origin and date of formation. This card is not used during the game: its purpose is to determine your Legendary Unit when you draw it from a deck.

Then, just behind the title card, you have a poker-sized card containing a set of RWB bonuses unique to that Unit. Each Unit has at least 1 totally unique bonus, often 2. For example, the 101's Leadership reads like this: "Do not gain Stars from your RWB dice; instead, another Unit draws 1 Award at random. OR all Units (including yours) gain 1 Courage." Another fun example is the Royal Engineers' Special Find: "You find a Duplicate Item, which acts like an exact copy of any Item in any Unit’s inventory (yours included). You must spend the required Item Points to find this Duplicate (use a token as a reminder). Once a Duplicate is used, it is removed from the game." And what about the Rangers' Battle Cry: "You may move twice during Phase 5 (spend the required Courage if you Advance and treat Landmines normally)."

As you can see, with these unique sets of RWBs, each Legendary Unit will have its own distinct flavor. For the 101, that flavor is "fried chicken with paprika". Also, the Legendary RWB Table card is designed to be placed on top of the bonuses printed on the player aid, so it covers them neatly.

Then, we have our brave Legendary Specialists, with their nifty camo suits that go with everything, including brown. Each Unit comes with 2 such Specialists, all unique and exclusive: only their respective Units can rally them (and they all cost 4 Stars). Notice the icon at the bottom of the "Screaming Eagle"? This means he is a Starting Specialist (every Unit has one). A Starting Specialist can be rallied for free at the start of the game, but to do so, you must renounce the starting resources printed on the Battle Map. If you choose not to rally him for free, you can do it the normal way, when you have enough Stars.

And finally, we have the Legendary Items. Each Unit has 3 unique ones, and no one else can find them except their corresponding Units. Of course, these Items are varied and cool: the Green Howards' Swagger Stick, the Royal Engineers' Utility Belt, the Black Watch's Bagpipes... the module will include 36 of them. But no Vorpal Bunnies, sorry. Vetoed again.

Next, we will discover the "Servicemen" module. And no, it's not about repairmen. These cards represent individual soldiers you meet on the battlefield....

Until then, eat your vegetables, floss regularly and check for Nazis under your bed.

Awesome, I love this game, and still use the satchel bag quite often (loved that KS bonus!)

Don't rub it in! Riding Dinos were included as "Legendary Vehicles" until Word Forge vetoed them. These guys are so uptight!

Emmanuel,

You indicate above that there are 12 legendary units in the War stories box. I think it was said on the kickstarter page that some of the early stretch goals were to fill out those 12. Can you say what the 12 legendary units are that will be in the retail box?

Thanks for the great game. I have been inspired to break out the 1st edition again, going to work through all of the maps in order. Cleaned up Juno last night.
