Hello everyone.

If a treachery card (like Heavy Curse) is revealed during setup instructions on a 1a quest card, do I still need to attached Heavy Curse to the quest?

Thanks,

Noah

From what I read on the card yes it would, and it surges, and if the sorcery word can affect the game state it will.

Yes you attach it to the quest card as stated. Treacheries during setup are resolved normally to their fullest extent. You can use response actions on any heroes or zero cost responses to counter them (if possible).

The surge keyword DOES NOT happen during setup. Surge only applies during the staging step of the quest phase.

Surge still resolves. It will resolve any time the card is revealed. So will Doomed. So was one of the earliest things clarified by the official FAQ:

"(1.01) Encounter Keywords
Surge, Doomed, and Guarded keywords should be
resolved any time the card on which they occur is
revealed from the encounter deck, including during
setup."

You can find the FAQ here:
https://images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/filer_public/64/ee...

These keywords do not resolve if the card is only "added" to the staging area. It needs to be "revealed."

Don't forget this can work out in your favour. Necromancer's Reach (deal 1 damage to each exhausted character) and its lurid art can swivel on this middle digit!

Some treacheries are toothless during setup, and others are especially brutal. Old Wives Tale (discard a resource from each hero, exhaust any heroes that can't discard a resource) can really make The Hunt for Gollum difficult.
