In anticipation of Sands being available for pre-order this month, and perhaps to generate some interest/support for Sands' nomination for 'most anticipated game of 2018', I've decided to write a series of posts riffing on Sands' strategic space. This will probably begin sometime in the next week or two; I'd like to wait till the rules have been publicly posted, which I think may happen in the next week or so.

The series will be posted at this BGG blog, but I'll also post alerts here in this thread, so if it's of interest you can subscribe in either place.

Part of the fun of discovering a new game is exploring its strategic landscape for yourself, and I don't want to pre-empt that process for anyone. But it's worth noting that the intent here isn't to provide a strategy guide so much as some top of the head ideas about how to combo certain scoring categories. It is, I suppose, a look at how I think about playing the game, but then I'm not actually all that good at the game, so you can probably safely read these posts without worrying about my spoiling anything for you!

Sands' scoring system involves 'chronicle cards'. Each player has 7, and each card can be scored in one of 6 different categories during each of the three 'dynasties'. It's typical to try to emphasize two of those six categories. Going for just one requires considerable single-mindedness, and going for three requires a commitment to diversification. So, six categories, choose 2, leads to thirty possible combinations. (And yes, A-B is different from B-A.) Hence, 30 strategies. I'll try to post one a day.

These will just be vignettes, not deep and detailed analysis. I hope the series will provide a faint glimpse of the game's strategic landscape -- like we're looking from a high place down at a valley blanketed in fog, and the fog has lifted just enough to reveal some of the peaks of the terrain, giving just a hint of a rich and varied country beneath it.

So where did the Preorder end up?

Really interested in this game, but the delays and news from Essen aren't heartening.

Yes I was interested in this game from reading the design diaries. Was looking forward to reading these strategies but 30 days later and there are none there?

What happened to the blog and the pre-orders Jeff?

My feeling is that it doesn't make sense to start the series until the rules have been posted publicly, since it's hard to follow a discussion about a game's strategic space if you don't know how to play.

I believe the rules must be complete at this point but they haven't been posted yet. I don't have any information about when the preorders will begin or what has caused the delay. I did see the Uli posted a mock-up of the box on twitter today so perhaps that's an indication that the preorder announcement is close?

30th post:

A-E, "The grand finale":
https://boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/72496/day-30-capital-size...

And with that, the series ends. Hmm, I'm sorry that we made it through the whole 30 days without the rules having been posted. Luckily the posts aren't going anywhere, so I hope that once the rules are available or once the game releases, readers might look back at this series and that it might offer some inspiration and amusement. I'm personally looking forward to reading about interesting strategies and combos that players discover as they play the game.
