Con of the North is coming up Feb 16th-18th.

This thread is for people do discuss their plans for the event, such as sharing information about what they’re running, talking about what they’re looking forward to, ask questions about the convention, coordinating plans for the convention, and so on.

It is at the Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West,
Friday Noon to 2 AM - Saturday 8 AM to 2 AM - Sunday 8 AM to 10 PM

Their website:
www.conofthenorth.org

For those who don’t know what to expect there, here’s this from their website:

What is a Games Convention?

A games convention is a gathering of people (usually annual) where everyone gets together to have a good time. This is accomplished in general by playing games and participating in other activities.

The games played at a convention are very wide ranging. Role playing games (such as D&D, Call of Cthulhu or Pathfinder), card games (Apples to Apples, Illuminati), war games (World in Flames), board games (Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride), miniatures games (Warhammer 40K), computer games (Artemis SBS, Minecraft, Quake2, Unreal Tournament), LARP (Society in Shadow) and many more.

In order to participate in the games you just register for the convention and then sign up for games, either in advance (by pre-registering), or at the convention.

New or inexperienced players are usually welcome to play or watch as they prefer.

Other activities at a games convention include costume events, auctions, volunteering, hanging out and talking, going without enough sleep and other good times.

Despite part of their website saying they still aren't available, it looks like event selection for Con of the North is up:

https://registration.conofthenorth.org/

Here's the list of what I'm running:

I'm lucky enough to be part of Brian's group running events. You can check them out here.

A lot of good events I’d want to join if I wasn’t running stuff myself. Space Hulk and Conan are two in particular I’d be interested in.

I only just got Conan. If I was submitting my events now I would add it to the list, but events had to be submitted months ago before I tried the game.

There are a lot of good events. I had no problem filling up my schedule (hoping to get into the ones I really want).

I've currently signed up for 12 events, so I have a couple blocks of free time left each day (as of right now).

Remember you can always turn your event tickets back in at the Con, that will be placed back onto the event board at the registration table. Typically I sign up for full schedule then if I need a break I'll turn a few events back in.

With their new system for registering in place, do you know if you successfully got into the events you’re interested in (or will you before the convention starts)?

This year I’m full up with running events, but just curious.

Oh, good to know. Thanks for the heads up. Looks like I'll be filling up the rest of my schedule then.

I think after the first stage, people might know the first 8 events they get into ahead of time but I'm not entirely sure. I also don't know when the second stage of event selection opens.

I hope they have allocated more space for open gaming this year. It was turning into quite the problem last year.

You can do it! Everyone I've encountered at CotN is really friendly and the staff is willing to point you in the right direction too.

It was cramped, especially on Saturday (usually the busiest day)...but I'm not sure how much more room they have? At least it's better than the "old days" when there wasn't open gaming and you had to ask for an open table.

Is it impossible to pre register for just 2 days? I have school Friday, so I am only available on the weekend, but it just shows an option for a 30$ registration.

I figured I would be able to buy just Saturday and Sunday for 22$, or am I reading it wrong?

For preregistration, its just $30 for the weekend, no other options.

Onsite, there's these choices:
Entire Weekend $40
Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday $32
Saturday Only $27
Friday or Sunday Only $22

I was a newbie last year and had a blast. I agree with the earlier post about filling your day with events and then turn in tickets you don't use. It was difficult to sign up for much once the Con starts.

This will be my second year. I signed up for a few events last year, but I didn't end up using my ticket. Instead, I spent my time in the Undead Viking room. I had a blast, but I'm hoping to get into more scheduled events this year. Specifically, I've signed up for a couple of different RPGs and a few board games I've been wanting to try.

I first heard about last years sometime that January and went anyway with really no clue what to expect other than that I'd be with a bunch of others that also wanted to play games. Had a great time and played a bunch of new games. I'll be heading back this year for sure... now to get my name in for a couple fast fillers...

Color me excited! Lots of new games to try to play that I don't get to see otherwise...

Looking forward to running "Cyclades" with Titans expansion Saturday morning, and Saturday afternoon I'm running "The Really Nasty Horse Racing Game" which is just what it sounds like!

I must say that I'm impressed with how friendly people are at Con of the North. If you are bold enough, and have an open mind and are willing to learn, you can find others who just want to play games.

If you are having trouble finding something, I highly recommend the 1st MN room, and the Undead Viking Room. Hang around, and when someone starts setting something up, ask if they are looking for players. It works for me half the time!

Play on!!!

This will be my third year attending the con in the past 4 years. My 11 year old will be attending for the first time. Not sure if we'll try to get into events or just find some pickup games. I'm running Ex Libris on Saturday morning but I'm open the rest of the con.

I love almost all games, play Boardgames with my wife, have three kids, generally enjoy cats and understand and like those bumper stickers with the little fishies sprouting legs.

One of these years I might get back to running some ticketed events... but this year I'm just planning to hang around the open game space and get some games in with my many friends I usually only see at CotN each year.

In particular I need to hunt down a time to teach

Otherwise I'll have some Clans of Caledonia, Empires of the Void II (if its here on time), Caylus, and perhaps Food Chain Magnate along. I'm sure I'll have some other things to add to the bag as we get closer but would love to arrange a time to teach some games to people if I have something in my collection that isn't on offer in the ticketed events.

I'm looking forward to another great Con of the North!

Zack, I’m teaching most of the Con this year. I took inspiration from you.

I just hope you don’t have any car “issues” this year.
