Could this work?
Have 4 Players playing all 8 characters, but the assimilation impacts the Player, not just an individual character. So if one of the characters controlled by the player is assimilated, then the Player is an imitation and must then use both characters to hide them-self (one character has an imitation card the other a human card).
You play the missions as 8 individual characters (2 each player).
Game start: 8 human & 1 imitation cards.
Extra card gets shuffled into the Blood Sample deck.
Blood sample: 5 human + the extra card from the start.
Since 25% of the team will essentially get assimilated at one time, it seems that having just 1 imitation card floating around is enough, instead of 2 that would cause 50% of the team to assimilate.
Now being even more tricky, again, one of the player's characters will still appear human...since their blood sample card will be human. This can be used to help hide the imitation player.
Same rules apply throughout and if either of the characters from the imitation player get on the helicopter the imitation player wins.
Keeping with the theme, one could consider that the human character of the imitation player is 100% loyal to the imitation character, so they are willing to go along with them and could never believe they are an imitation.
