From other threads it seems clear most cards in this game have to have the same color backs. The question is - which color?

I am partial to Dragon Shield Matte sleeves. What do you think would be the best color for the bulk of the game's cards?

Matte Apple Green?
Matte Green?
Matte Black?
Matte Jet?

I am not sure how accurate the colors shown in online pics are (depends heavily on lighting etc.) so I am curious for opinions from those of you who like to use this brand/style of sleeve.

Thanks

Also wondering what is the best color for the Strikes deck. Crimson? Red? Jet?

Hey there chuft, black or jet would be what I would choose, were I sleeving this game. I think that goes with the setting the most.

The only other thing I would think of is the possibility in the future of combining this with other Legendary games. Just my $.02.

Thanks. I don't know how combining works, the only game I would think of combining with this one is the Predators one. Combining means playing competitively right? At this point in life I am a solitaire/co-op guy, so if combining means competitive play then I would not be doing that.

I sleeved my whole game with green Ultra Pro matte sleeves. They look nice.

I'm rethinking it now though, having other decks in different colors sounds appealing, like the Strike deck in red. Different colors would make it easier to tear down and put it all away when done. Have to be careful with some decks though, like the Hive deck with Jonesy or Newt. That deck would have to be the same color as the Barracks deck.

Yeah I think everything has to be the same color except Objectives, Locations, Avatars, and Strikes, which can be different. There is a Facehugger in the Strike deck but if it came out I would just put it aside and use one from the Hatchery instead so it could go in the Dead Enemies pile (and later Hive if necessary) with no problems.

If I use up all the Facehuggers from the Hatchery, it's really no different than if I never pulled a Strike one. I could just use the put aside one for the impregnation attempt, and if it gets killed, put it aside again - there would be one less Facehugger in the dead enemies pile, but too bad Aliens, that's enough Facehuggers for you anyway if you've exhausted the Hatchery.

I am torn on Strikes, the cards all have red on the fronts so they would look good with a red or crimson border when face-up, but when face down the Strikes deck being red or crimson, combined with green cards for the other decks, would create a "Christmas" look that I don't particularly like in an Alien game, which should be mostly green and black.

On the other hand making the Strike cards green means when face-up they will have a "Christmas" look due to the red/blood colors on the art combined with a green border.

Objective cards also seem to have a lot of red on them near the top border.

I am thinking the ideal is probably a green (regular or Apple?) for most of the cards but Jet for the strikes.

I am currently using clear sleeves for most of the cards with Ivory for the avatars, Petrol for the Locations, and Jet for the Strikes and Objectives. I think if I made the bulk of the cards a green instead of clear it would look much better. Torn on whether to use regular or Apple green though.

Don’t worry about the colour combinations. Alien is just as good an xmas movie as Die Hard despite the lack of a celebration theme. The queen could be seen as a sort of intergalactic Santa

Using Ultra-pro Mattes, I went with -

- Anything appearing in the Hive deck = Black
- Strikes = Red
- Anything appearing in the Barracks deck/player decks = Green
- Alien player cards = Aqua/Turquoise
- Locations/Objectives - different colours so the Loc's match the Obj's (just makes set-up and take down a bit easier and I had lots of colours around from various LCG's)

You need a few spare Green and Black sleeves to handle cards which swap decks in the course of the game - like Jonsey.

Recently I resleeved all my Alien & Predator Encounters cards. I used Mayday transparent sleeves before, but they were of variable quality, even their size varied a bit between packs, so I decided to go with colored Dragon Shields. Quite an investiment... I could have bought one quite BIG and expensive board game for the money I spent on Dragons. But they look superior and I hope they will last. I like glossy sleeves over the mattes, because they are easier to shuffle. Besides I've been told by the gaming shop salesman that after some time the mattes tend to stick together when stored for longer periods. The mattes are being offered in more colors, but this is enough for my needs.

I'm using a different color for each movie :

Green for Alien Barracks.
Blue for Aliens Barracks.
Red for Alien 3 Barracks.
Yellow for Alien Resurrection Barracks.

I rarely experiment with mixing characters from various movies, so I mostly keep them stored this way. But I also use white sleeves which I have reserved for custom mixed Barracks and black sleeves which I have reserved for custom mixed Hives. I've put all Barracks cards into the Dragon Shield boxes and made a different paper sleeve for each Barracks deck.
5 Grunts and 7 Specialists are always sleeved in each of those colors, so they can be instantly used with each of these Barracks.
Sarges, Role Cards and Agendas are kept unsleeved and I sleeve them into color of the movie scenario I intend play.
The Hive decks follow the same color cheme, but instead of using colored back sleeves, they are in transparent Dragons and I printed inserts on a colored paper which tightly fit into the sleeves. These colored paper backs have their respective movie logo on their back side, so no more generic "Legendary" logo on the back. In addition to the colors mentioned above I made bright green paper backs for Alien Incursion Hive and cyan color paper backs for Alien Evolved Hive.
Avatars and Locations are in transparent sleeves. They are usually face up on the playmat, so I don't mind the Legendary logo on their back. I have also the Conversion Kit Locations and Objectives for Predator hunter mode, which are sleeved in Apple Green color for quick recognition (the only matte sleeves I use so far).
One or two Facehuggers and Chestbursters are also always sleeved in color of each Barracks deck.
Strike cards are in crimson sleeves.

Detail of my dividers. They're original Legendary dividers with my custom made stickers on them and laminated for durability.
The first card visible on the right is, as you may have guessed, Jonesy - but it's a scanned and printed copy of Jonesy. I scanned and printed all Hive cards which go eventually to Barracks (Newt, Fury 161 brothers, Purvis...) so I don't have to interrupt the game with resleeving the originals in Barracks. I put these copies into sleeves of the same color as my current Barracks before the game.

This is the Expansion box. I keep all Queen Mom cards in it, sleeved in dark purple. Also I keep Alien Player (currently not sleeved) there, and Drones and Soldiers sleeved in black, ready to be used in custom Hives.

I have sleeved LE Predator cards in a similar manner - I'll post a pic in the future maybe.

When researching sleeves I often look for comments/pics on Reddit due to the large and serious Magic community there. Some serious sleeve users/reviewers there. Interesting discussions on KMC's acquisition by another company and lowering of sleeve quality etc.

While trying to find good pictures of the "Apple Green" vs the "Green" matte Dragon Shield sleeves, I went to Google Images and searched for

"reddit dragon shield matte apple green sleeve"

and Google decided to show me this

It was such a neat concept I just wanted to share. Apparently "aurora borealis hair coloring" is now a thing.

I really hope this fashion catches on lol.

Now if only they made sleeves like that....

Johner: Hey, Ripley. I heard you, like, ran into these things before?
Ripley: That's right.
Johner: Wow, man. So, like, what did you do?
Ripley: I dyed my hair to look like an aurora.

Apple green is very bright, almost neon green in daylight, but not really neon. Actually I haven't seen any green apples to be THAT green, ever and I most certainly wouldn't eat anything of such color.😁 The normal green is more darker shade of green, like most leaves on trees are in summer.

I like the idea of the Apple Green. What troubles me is that in some shots it looks like it has a lot of white in it:

while in darker lighting shots it's a nice lime green

I like the lime green color, it's very Nostromo-computery, but the whiter shade, not so much. No way to tell which one is accurate, if either of them are.

If it helps, this is a comparison of apple green with standard green in daylight. I kept the settings of my camera as neutral as possible... The standard green sleeve is glossy, not matte, but the color should be theoretically the same with matte. (Click on the pic to have a look at bigger sizes).

Thanks very much. I like that vivid hue, think I am going to go with Apple Green. I think the official Dragon Shield pics make it look paler than it is.

I personally went with matte green for that army “barracks” look.
But honestly, since the character deck is the vast majority of your cards, go with whatever is cheaper.

I have always associated Alien with bright green and black, due to the marketing materials like the movie posters

the DVD and Blu-Ray box sets

The Nostromo computer

It's kind of odd, now that I think about it, because the xenomorphs appear to be greyish black with bright yellow blood, and I don't think any of the movies use a greenish palette.

Yet for me "bright green and black" screams "Alien" to me, and probably always will.

So for me I think the ideal color for the Hive, drones, Facehuggers etc would be lime green (or "Apple green" as Dragon Shield is apparently calling it) with black for the strikes or barracks. The strikes are a quandary because they have so much red in them on their fronts that they really clash with green, but I don't want to make them red, because I don't like the Christmas red-and-green look that results. I could make them black/Jet, which works well with the red on the card fronts, but that leaves the question of what color to make the barracks. Ivory (to match the color of the Nostromo hypersleep chamber and lit corridors)? Regular green, for the Aliens "Colonial Marines" color? Petrol, because it just is such a cool looking dark turquoise color and vaguely naval in its connotations?

I'm horribly indecisive on aesthetic issues. I spent a month deciding what color to paint my Nautilus from Nemo's War - analyzing all the posted pics of other people's paint jobs, looking at paint selections in nearby stores, online images of the Nautilus from paintings and films, etc. It's become quite a curse. Dragon Shield sleeves in this quantity are so expensive that it makes pulling the trigger that much harder.

If Alien is apple green to you, you should totally get apple green then! cool

Be sure to check my sleeving guide. It has a photo of how the game looks with colored sleeves.

https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/150531/legendary-encounte...

I hear your concerns about Christmas colors with green barracks/hive and red strikes - I was too - but it doesn’t resemble Christmas at all. The red for wounds is very fitting, especially when sitting next to your avatar.

When you get it sleeved post some photos. Good luck.

By the way does anyone have a photo (not the Arcane Tinmen product photo, those always tend to be unrealistically bright) comparing matte Crimson to matte Red?

Very hard to get a sense of what the difference is. Pics of Crimson in the field seem impossible to find.

The apple green turned out to have more white in it than I hoped; I had hoped for more of a vivid lime green. But this will do for now. Dragon Shield keeps bringing out new matte colors, this month they brought out Slate and Magenta for example, so I can only hope they bring out a lime green eventually. (Magenta might be perfect for the purple-game-mat Legendary Buffy).

Here is the result, with some extras thrown in to sway the judges.
