"Discarding Cards:
At the end of a battle, a Player can discard all his remaining Cards so long
as he has no Mercenary Cards in his hand. If a Player has a mercenary Card he
is not allowed to discard. Discarding is not required. A Player can choose
not to discard, but instead play Special Cards he might have."

This does not explain if this then constitutes the end of this player's participation in the round (which seems a bit defeatist to me); or if he draws cards to the number he discarded; or refreshes his hand to 10 and the round continues with this player having an advantage (my personal favorite).

Could someone clear this up for me?

Re:Question about discarding cards
Yes, it does end your participation in the round, but no, it's not defeatist, far from it. Rounds end "when after a battle there is only one player with cards remaining in his hand." So, by discarding your remaining cards, you might cause the last player with cards to lose an opportunity to conquer another city. At that point, the round ends and all players get a fresh hand of cards.

msaya (#30964),
Thank you. I see the sense in that as a strategic move, but doesn't help much if you're the only one without cards for the next battle. Luck of the draw.

Re:Question about discarding cards
sodaklady (#30966),

A great deal of the strategy of the game is arranging it so that you don't run out before everyone else... at least, not without conquering a bunch of cities first.

A classic beginner's mistake is to spend too many cards for nothing.

You can hold on to a bishop or key to end a battle to keep a player from winning....
