Anyone still reading this thread may be interested to know that while we're still within the window of this contest -- and therefore the rules can't be altered at the moment -- the following proposed rules changes are being tested:

When adding a spoils card to the Hero Deck, you remove a card from the deck.
With this change, the Hero Deck's size is fixed at 25 cards. Adding a card to the Hero Deck is already a potent option for many builds, but this makes it a very attractive alternative to increasing a hero's health even when you don't have an ability that really needs it.

The next boss is revealed at the start of the encounter deck (instead of the end).
Right now, you might get to peek at the upcoming boss if the deck is exhausted mid-battle, but there's not much you can do to react to that. By making the next boss's identity available from the start, you can make more informed decisions about which abilities to prioritize.

Alternate character classes.
Within the limitations of the contest, the reverse side of each hero card is used as a damage tracker. Once the contest is over, the rules will change to accommodate more components. That frees up the backs of the hero cards, and what better way to use them than to provide variants? Each hero will be available to play in its current form as well as a remixed form, providing a new set of abilities out of the box.

Progress! Here are some changes you can look forward to:

Revised abilities.
Some of the learnable abilities weren't performing up to par.

Warrior's Bull Rush has been replaced with Reckless Charge, an attack that deals X+3 damage but causes X-2 damage to the Warrior. This extremely potent damage option combos well with Raging Blow, which scales off the damage the Warrior has taken.

Bard's Confusion has been replaced with Persuasion. Instead of putting the action card on the bottom of the deck and drawing a new one, Persuasion discards the action card then lets you search your discard pile for a replacement.

Hero variants.
I alluded to this in the last update. Each hero card will be two-sided, allowing you to select two sets of starting abilities.

All of the hero variants have been designed, and they're going through testing now. Here's a peek at the variant Bard:

This Bard trades healing for the ability to negate large amounts of damage (by skipping town). Discretion is the best part of valor!

Deck of Many Dungeons is getting an overhaul as I prepare to pitch it to publishers. Highlights:

* The game supports 1 to 4 players instead of 1 to 2. With more than two players, each player controls a single hero, and players discard and redraw only once per Discard Phase. Hand size is 3 for three players and 2 for four players. Otherwise, the game plays as with two players.
* You no longer lose the game if all of one player's heroes die; all heroes must die instead.
* When used to Heal a Hero, boss spoils can heal dead heroes. If used this way, they remove 3 damage instead of 6.
* The rules have been updated to mention new components (damage counters and "additional target" markers), although these components don't actually exist in PnP form. Any references to the damage tracker have been removed, although the damage tracker does still exist in the PnP.

The updated rules are available here.

I've had some positive feedback from publishers. The game is currently undergoing a round of revisions and testing, after which I have a publisher who's interested in giving it another look.
