We were curious why on the FERT die roll modifier chart why there is a +4 listed for facing an enemy in march order while in a mountain pass. On the terrain chart there is a -4 for battle while in march order in a pass.

Rule 18.3.10: c) A Formation must be in March Order Deployment Mode to enter a Pass and must remain that way while in the Pass. d) Unbrigaded Troop units are assumed to be in March Order while in a pass.

Since no troops can change mode in a pass why are there modifiers for a different deployment mode? We then assumed the intent is a formation can change modes in the battle adjustment round, then have to change to march order in the next ops phase to continue moving. Would 18.3.10c override that choice? Does (d) apply to unbrigaded troops at all times then including the battle?

Related to this can a formation that is reaction moving to a pass while in a mode other than march stay in the mode they are in or do they auto change to march mode? Then could they change modes in the adjustment round?

Hi Clayton,

All combat and movement in the mountain passes must have the unit in column formation. If react moving into a pass, the unit must enter column formaion first. The +4 modifier on the Fert should have been deleted. Please ignore it. This will be added to the addenda file.
