For my first game in January, I played the Generaist. I really like having the flexibility of the bonus action per round, and I was also super intrigued by her ability to gain 4 upgrades. But, after the first month, I ended up replacing her with the Researcher and she was never touched again the whole game.

I'm wondering what other people did with their Generalists. I love the IDEA of the Generalist's 4 upgrade slots, but because she's, well, a Generalist, she seems to lack synergy with anything. At first I'd though of giving her Forecast and Pilot to let her act like the Troubleshooter from one of the Pandemic expansions, but those upgrades are much better used by other characters who have better synergy with them.

So, I'm just curious whether anybody managed to find a really good set of upgrades or something that let the Generalist truly shine without taking upgrades that other characters could have used then more effectively.

My first game back in the day was me, my dad, my mom and my GF. Quite the team

I was thrilled to get the generalist because of the 4 upgrades and because it had more actions. It all seemed awesome to me. We lost terribly and I got "talked to" by my father to change characters. Since then I've never even thought of using the generalist anymore. Especially in the long run when

Curing the diseases is easier and you want those military types of units and stuff.

Hmm... interesting. We didn't use the Generalist either if I recall correctly.
I think it would have been a strong replacement choice if more of us had died.

My brother played the generalist throughout the entire campaign. He liked the idea of the four upgrades, but never actually got them until the very end of the game. Still, an extra action each turn is a nice, consistent power.

I was talked out of the generalist during January, but then when February came we took her along, because

We ended up using her for the rest of the game as I recall. I think that even though I was the most pro-generalist in the beginning I only played once then she became popular with the group.
We used the Chazi-app (Android) to randomly choose starting player, and it also was the starting player who picked character first.

Our primary team was something like this:

Me: Operations Expert
Christina: Medic/Scientist
Knud: Generalist

In my first run-through we used the generalist in December, and she was super-handy, but now on my second play, we are still not taking her early. The other characters are just too good, and together they cover all the bases nicely.

The Generalist is probably much more useful in 2P since you'll get more extra actions (compared to higher player counts) over the course of the game, and if she's fully loaded with upgrades, you'd get to use those more often as well. I think other characters are more useful at 3P+.

Agreed. I think we were right not to touch the Generalist in our 4P campaign, but I'm pretty sure we'd use them most of the time if playing 2P.

As far as character upgrades go, I feel they're twice as useful in 2P games as in 4P games, because you have twice as much opportunity to use one. Even without the Generalist, that suggests other upgrades may be relatively more useful at higher player counts, and it's the usefulness of character upgrades that informs the usefulness of the character who can take four of them.

This doesn't make sense to me. In a two-player game, the medic has to handle more infections, and the scientist and researcher are getting more cards.

The dispatcher is obviously less powerful with fewer players.

I'm not saying the Generalist is better than the other roles, just that she's better in 2P vs higher player counts.

Mmm. As expressed there, I see what you mean.

I guess the missing step is the observation that the Generalist's extra action is uniformly useful. Conversely, if you're only playing two characters, you can only get two specialisms in play each game. And to get full value out of a specialism, it has to achieve something you want done every other turn.

You are not allowed to do this. You have to first select character and then determine the starting player.

I used the generalist all 12 months in a 4 player game and I believe we got some excellent usage.

Details in spoilers as some of these stickers are provided later in game.

Upgrades:
-Pilot
-Veteran
-Shady background

Co-worker relationship

This made a highly mobile character that was able to get in and out of hotspots without a high risk of scarring, able to very quickly pass cards to a designated curer or take cards to assist with this, build research stations and military bases, and then later helped out to easily meet the sabotage condition.

We actually only used operation expert very late in the game and it made producing the last structure a breeze and we were happy to pull it in new with a relationship then.
