I have to disagree. Of course 3-4 player is a tighter experience, but you are still racing to get points quicker, blocking is still a viable tactic and when you get large trees, keeping to yourself is just impossible, it would require you to actively avoid hexes that give more points. The game works very nicely in 2 player and I do enjoy it that way. I would only change the turn order thing (actually I will post this in variants)
Yeah, you basically take two turns in a row everytime when playing with two. Not the ideal player count. But still playable. You get the full effect of the game, no dummy player or anything.
