Do you start as the nice or bad santa when you use this one, or do you get to pick?
Nice idea 😀

I'd start as Old St.Nick as he actually has starting power. Plus it would be pretty awesome to keep Bad Santa a secret from your friends until it's retribution time.

So should santa start from any open faction? Or Better have santa start on this Oil with both workers (or maybe just one worker). This looks really fun.

I was wondering about the starting space too, but I guess that isn't too important. Was still wondering:

1. What does the <?> on Bad Santa's starting military power mean?
If it is <?> to mean "start play with Old St. Nick side", I would have expected to see <?> for starting combat cards as well.
Is it <?> because you would instantly convert your starting popularity to military power?

2. Is the coal given to other players stored on the hex (per other resources in Scythe), or is it given to the player themselves?

Hi Amanda,

Always a pleasure! I had no idea this casual joke could stir up such great conversations.

To be honest what I had in mind was releasing the custom North Pole faction logo I created as its own cutout. You'd simply cover up an existing faction's logo on the board and go from there.

You'd actually need to start on the Old St.Nick side, yes.

Not a bad suggestion Phillip! Very thematic! Perhaps we can create a little north pole token. Or Santa's workshop?

This is cool, seems a little OP, but could still be fun. And maybe not, taking a turn off to switch from Good to Evil might be enough of a downside to keep him balanced.

The switching Power to Popularity mechanic is only for Santa, right? He doesn't switch everyone's stats?

Really cool idea! Great puns.

Hi Greg,

Yes the Popularity <-> Power switching only applies to Santa. (thankfully)

One thing that would be nice if the abilities that mention zones could have icons

I'm still not sure what the coal does: does it affect gameplay, or is it purely thematic?

Bad Sanata's special is to convert your combat opponents coal to power (for you).

The "Bad Santa" side says that before combat, you retrieve your opponent's coal and gain an equivalent amount of Power.

EDIT: ninja

Emil: I would like to think that it's thematic and practical. Looks like they've answered your question--something wicked comes for all the naughty players.

Looks like we have our first reported game using this variant. (thanks to Shane) It looked close!

Hey Hoby,

What exactly do you mean by "Ignore retreat effects in combat with santa"? do you mean two factions would remain on the same space after a combat is resolved?

Hi Andrew,

That was aimed at factions that can retreat onto lake spaces after combat. If you lose against Santa, you get sent to your starting space like everyone else.

I see that no one has answered your question in just over a full calendar year lol the ? mark is because Bad Santa's starting strength is determined by your popularity and amount of coal returned.

After seeing the Christmas Scythe Variant by Hoby Chou, I decided to make it an official expansion to my game. Since I upgraded all my regular plastic mechs to the metal versions, I had to make sure my Christmas Expansion was also metal :-)

https://stonemaiergames.com/games/scythe/metal-mechs/

On the Bad Santa side, I purchased 4 Sinister Snowmen from RPE Miniatures & Games (XM1802 Sinister Snowman) after their 2018 Wicked Wonderland Kickstarter to represent Bad Santa's Mechs

http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/550360615/wicked-wonder...

For Bad Santa, himself, I purchased Evil Santa (XM1801) from REP Miniatures & Games after their 2018 Wicked Wonderland Kickstarter and 2 sets of Coal Tokens (10) from Top Shelf Gamer (made by Stonemaier Games) so I'd have at least 16 Coal Tokens

https://www.topshelfgamer.com/collections/stonemaier-treasur...

On the Old St. Nick side, I purchased 2 sets of the Naughty & Nice Christmas Elves (01582) from Reaper Miniatures to represent Old St. Nick's Mechs

https://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/naughty/latest/01580

For Old St. Nick, himself, I purchased Father Christmas (01589) from Reaper Miniatures

https://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/christmas/sku-down/015...

Now, I had to make sure all the bases were the same so I made sure they were all 1-inch bases but then painted the bases so they looked like snow. I am not really a painter so just doing the bases was good enough for me, plus this new Christmas Expansion better matches what I have if I don't fully paint them.

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Texture-Valhallan-Blizz...

I have the legendary box and it is wonderful as it holds everything even my Christmas Scythe Variant Character Mats which I printed from Hoby Chou, but I couldn't fit these new characters or the Factory in the box, so I went to a local store called Dollarama and bought two boxes for about a dollar each.

https://stonemaiergames.com/games/scythe/legendary-box/

The box is approx. 12cm in diameter and 6.5cm in height and cost only $1.25 CAD at Dollarama. I also bought a smaller box so I could use the lid on the inside. I cut a hole in the small box's lid so the factory could fit in the middle, then all the figures would be raised surrounding the factory.

For those wondering where I bought the factory, I bought it from a guy on Etsy.com https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/665185101/scythe-components?...

I just want to say, Thank you Hoby Chou
