Greetings! Thanks for checking this out! I've been working on a quick little card game called Dwarven Bar Brawl, and I'm really needing some extra eyes on it.
Players take the roles of some rowdy Dwarves enjoying a night of pint drinking and first slinging at a crowded tavern. Players take turns dealing and playing different cards to build a tableau of scoring BEER! cards. Like Blackjack, players are trying to reach a certain total, without going over it.
The game consists of 23 cards and is played in a 'first to 10' fashion, earning points each round based on their scoring row Totals.
Most cards are BEER! cards which are valued 4-7 and collect infront of the players between turns.
Some BEER! cards also contain Actions on them, when a card is played a player decides if they want to trigger that cards Action, or 'drink' the Beer (Adding it to their Total)
Action cards can allow players to play extra cards onto another players tablaeu, play cards out of order, and discard unwanted cards.
The dealer changes every turn, and several turns create a round. Each round goes until all but 1 player black out or (more likely) until a BRAWL! card is revealed. This triggers the end of the round at the end of that turn, and then players should compare scoring rows and award points.
Current Rulebook Version is V.5
Let me know what you think, I hope you enjoy it!
A note about your Rulebook:
On Page 1 under the end of round scoring I would add a note that only players that are not blacked out may receive VP. You note under the beer card section that players who black out cannot receive VP, but it would be more clear if also included in the end of round scoring section. As it reads now, you might assume the player with the highest total in their scoring row gets the 3 VP regardless of being blacked out, then the players who are not blacked out get a bonus VP. I assume the intent of the end of round scoring is VP for the highest sum in their scoring row without having blacked out.
At the start of the game when players may return Brawl cards to the deck and redraw, does this mean they can keep them? Is the intent that a players first card in hand should not be a Brawl, or that they have a choice?
As it reads the round continues until A) there are no remaining cards to play, or B) a Brawl card has been played. This makes it seem like blacked out players continue to play in the round. Since players cannot score once blacked out, I would add in that a note about when the round continues to a new deal, only draw and deal cards based on players not blacked out.
Regarding the dealing drawings N+1 cards and returning 1 card to the draw pile. I would assume this would become really unbalanced if someone where to use the oops card and be forced to draw a card the dealer knows (bigger issue in a 2 or 3 player game). Should the deck be shuffled after each deal?
I haven't played yet to know how often a round ends from a brawl, use of all cards, or 1 player left not blacked out. Something I might try after a few rounds is test to see if shuffling all discards back into the deck before the 2nd/3rd dealer would effect the game play significantly. It may lead to more blacked out players than brawls.
Interesting concept so far, do you have any artwork planned?
On Blacked out scoring: I'll definitely clarify that, Blacked out players always receive 0 points on a round.
On first round Brawl cards: I suppose I should make this mandatory. I wanted to prevent players from being stuck with 2 BRAWL! cards in the first round. I had it an optional choice but I don't see any reason why a player would want to be stuck with a Brawl card without knowing what their other card already was. Noted!
On ending the round and being blacked out: Right, another bit I need to clarify. A blacked out player is out of that round, and shouldn't be deal anymore cards
I like giving the dealer that knowledge of what was on top of the deck it gave that little bit more of control, but so far I haven't seen a situation of a dealer placing a trap this way. It's something to consider though.
On ending the game: I've found the game generally has 2 'phases'. For the first few rounds its almost exclusively players building up a small collection of BEER! cards. Typically, actions and BRAWLS don't come out until 3 or 4 cards in. At this point, most players are already close to busting. More often than not, busting happens in the last round of the game. I'd like for it to be a more invasive threat though, early black outs will probably happen more an 3-4 player games than anything.
For most of my projects I just do my own art. But I get a bit tired of it, I do a lot of cartooney-vector type art and I wanted to try something new for this. I have an illustrator friend working on some things but we don't have any solid ideas yet.
I did these funny guys awhile ago but probably won't use anything like this, lol
Thanks a lot! Many excellent points.
