2018 Wargame Print and Play Contest

2nd Place: Best Game in 2018 year's theme:
SCI-FI & FANTASY

TLDR wrote:

The game: This game is best described as an strategic wargame for two players set on an eight by eight board, a game that is set in an fable warfare between tribes of deers, reindeers and elks. There are two armies, the defending army with the objective to protect the king pawn and to pacify the attacker, the attacking army with the objective to either capture or kill the king.

The pieces has a unique form of movement and battels occurs when a piece is placed adjacent to an opponent's piece, via its movement. Battles in the game is settled by dice rolls, action tokens is used to limit amount of choices (mostly movement) during each turn.

Reign of Deer

Description: Due to climate change the northern tribes is moving to the south to find new lands and there encounters the local militia roaming the Sacred Woodoms. War is upon them all as the local tribes won't make way, not willingly giving up their lands. who will reign the land of Deer? What is the threat that is hiding in the shadows as the Deer king weakens? What treasures is hidden in the Sacred fields?

Slogan: "We has to rein the northern deers before it is too late!", says a local militia leader.

Overview: Abstract strategy wargame

Ludo: Agon+Alea

Players: 2
Game Time: 15-40 minutes
Ages: 8+

Theme: War over territory (between, reindeers, red deers and elks).

Gameplay:

The game starts with a deployment phase when both players set up the board and placing their pawns, after that there is two alternating phases. One phase with movement; when both players is able to move pawns and one phase with battling; when any adjacent pawn is allowed to attack each other. These two alternating phases is considered as “a turn” and continues until there is a winner.

You have three action tokens per turn to move, add to a roll or to reroll. You do not save them between turns and can not stack them over time. You use either in the movement phase, the dust phase or in both. Unused tokens at the end of a turn is discarded. You begin every new turn with three new action tokens.

Current phase: In progress, playtesting.

Rules : Rules document for comments (google doc, work in progress)

Art & gamedesign: Quadrante Isegrim

Components:

The Protectors of the Sacred Woodom: One king pawn (crowned deer), One queen pawn (heart deer), six defending deers (will henceforth be referred to as defendeers). Three action tokens and three six sided dice.

The Conqueror Kings of the far North: Four king pawns (elks), six attacking deers (will henceforth be referred as attackdeers, and when pacified as reindeers). Three action tokens and three six sided dice.

Playingfield: A game plan divided into eight times eight squares. The outer row around the playing field (the outer rim) in a dark color, the middle four squares in a cohesive bright color (the sacred fields), other boxes alternate light and dark as on a chessboard (the realm). Dark areas counts as woods and light areas counts as fields.

Areas of the playing field (picture here).

All rules should now be in place, but not yet all the pictures or the files. Guess you could play this with other pawns as well ... and a chessboard.

Feel free to comment here or in the google document!

Pictures will clarify some of it, but I have probably still forgot to mention something important ...

I literally saw 10 whitetail deer in my yard a few nights ago. So this is what the world has come to.

Re: [WIP] Reign of Deer – 2018 Wargame Print and Play Contest
Some small rule changes:

*Was thinking of a ten by ten board, but eight by eight seams enough. *Ditches the five or less defendeer limit for deployment.
*Elk kings and defending queen does not spark or pacify at starting square when moving.
*Defending side chooses (first) in what order battles is rolled and which battles to battle during the dust phase. The attacker still chooses if and when to reroll or add dice.
*If there are battles unbattled at the end of the the dust phase (after the defender has chosen) the attacker can choose to pursue these or not.

Not decided yet:

*Are you able to get a new queen after it has been killed?
*Are the queen able to move both diagonally and orthogonally?

It did not end up as an area controle game, but I will do one later (some day). Abstract wargame, if that is a term.

Well, it was not that bad guess. Who do you want to win, the Elks or the Deers?
