As they are right now the cardholders are pretty useless, the cards just flop out of the slot. The slots are too wide and/or too shallow. Anyone have any ideas on how to make them do their job?

Unfortunately, throw them away and buy new ones. Relatively cheap on Ebay.
I bought ones with two rows that work very well (cedar wood).

The only time I have had trouble with them was when a ceiling fan was on one notch too high and kept tipping a set over.

Your ones must have a manufacturing defect

At this point I think the only useful thing to do with the cardholders is to toss them into the fire and get a few minutes of warmth from them devil
