Leela Zero is an open-source reimplementation of the system described in the AlphaGo Zero paper, which learns to play Go with no human guidance beyond the game rules.

You can lend computer time to help it become stronger through self play. According to the developer, "you need a PC with a GPU, i.e. a discrete graphics card made by NVIDIA or AMD, preferably not too old, and with the most recent drivers installed".

Leela Zero has been training for a month now. There's a spreadsheet where you can follow its daily progress. Its initial rating was -3451 Elo points, corresponding to random play. As I write this, it stands at 511 points. The best humans are rated around 3600 points.

I feel the need for a little more hand holding to kick start this process.

Go to https://github.com/gcp/leela-zero/releases
download the latest leela release, unzip somewhere, and run autogtp.exe

This will start running the project and effectively donate 1 core
or your machine to improving lela. You'll hardly notice it. You'll
have to restart autogtp after you reboot.

Thumb this post if you have done it!

Do you know if it can be made to work on a computer with no GPU? I installed OpenCL drivers manually but it didn't help.

I think it still runs, but much more slowly. Also, if your CPU
doesn't have multiple cores, it will appear to be a hog that uses
100% of your machine.

It's listed as a to-do item:
https://github.com/gcp/leela-zero#todo

I'm pretty sure OpenCL is only supported on graphics cards. However, even if you don't have a discrete GPU, if you have an Intel processor, you probably have an integrated GPU. I've never tried it, so I don't know if this will work, but it looks like Intel provides OpenCL drivers for their integrated GPUs here: https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/opencl-drivers

Yes, I have an integrated GPU. I installed the OpenCL drivers from that site, but it didn't help.

CPU-only support just added, yay!

Contributing my first training game as we speak.
