Me and my two brothers will play a couple of games this Christmas. Both like Risk and Talisman, and one of them also likes Chess while the other is interested in cars, We've already played Pandemic which was fun, but I want to try 1-3 of the games below.

Which 2-3 games would you choose in this situation?

* 7 Wonders
* Catan
* China
* Civilization: New Dawn
* Concordia
* Cyclades
* Empires: Age of Discovery
* Fire & Axe
* Inis
* Lords of Waterdeep
* Maria
* Mysterium
* Skirmish Wars: Advance Tactics
* Stone Age
* The Golden Ages
* Ticket to Ride Europe
* Troyes
* Wallenstein

Could I be awkward and suggest Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries as it is a specialised 3 player game in place of TTR: Europe?

Yes but the list above contains the games I have in my possession right now. I won't buy any other game before Christmas.

From your list: I sequenced them based on your preferences. None of these are that confrontational or cerebral (Risk/Chess). Most of the other games seem like a bridge too far unless there is some familiarity with the mechanisms.

* Stone Age (would choose this over Catan any day of the week)
* 7 Wonders (light and quick with addictive qualities)
* Lords of Waterdeep (simple worker placement game with a "theme")
* Ticket to Ride Europe (simple to get into and the best of the line, IMO)
* The Golden Ages (this one would be a stretch as there are a lot of moving parts, good game)

Of the others:
Inis: marginal, confrontational but the end game is a bit weird but they like Talisman so maybe it could work.

I can't recommend:
* Catan: see note above
* Concordia: too much
* Cyclades: too much and just odd
* Troyes: Love the game but this is a brain twister for the many that I have shown it to.

Don't know about the others.

Games I would most like to play from that list:
* Inis
* Maria
* Troyes

I firmly believe that some people can play complex games without having to "build up" via entry games - but it depends on the person and their interest in learning new games. That said, Troyes might be more complicated than your brothers would appreciate.

If they aren't very excited about new games, then maybe try one of:
* Catan
* Mysterium
* Ticket to Ride Europe

These are all more social experiences, so it's easy to chat while playing.

Good options - my thoughts:
* 7 Wonders - better with more than three due to the military aspect.
* Catan - not my favorite and not great with three
* Concordia - Awesome game - plays well with three
* Cyclades - Nice but ends abruptly - better with more
* Empires: Age of Discovery - Awesome (probably also better with 4)
* Inis - Very interesting and different game, but not for everyone
* Lords of Waterdeep - Great WP game
* Mysterium - better with more
* Stone Age - could fit your group - good Euro introduction
* The Golden Ages - Nice game
* Ticket to Ride Europe - Not for me, but well liked - not terribly deep
* Troyes - Great game
* Wallenstein - Awesome...Risk like (sort of...)

My best guess for you would be:
* Wallenstein - Territories similar to Risk and a cube tower!!
* Concordia - Set collection, deck building and resource management
* Empires: Age of Discovery - Worker placement and expansion with conflict
* Inis - Lots of ways for this to end...fun tug of war

Additional option:
* Automobiles - might fit with love of cars - has bag building mechanic

Good luck...

There must have been a moment at the beginning, where we could have said no. Somehow we missed it. Well, we'll know better next time.

Of the games on that list that I know, I'd order them like this:

* Empires: Age of Discovery Best game on the list. Longer play time, but if you like Risk that shouldn't be a deterrent. Area control aspect gives points to the top 2 in any area, so it can be savage as a 3-player.

* Lords of Waterdeep
* Stone Age

Both on the lighter side of worker placement. If dice-chucking is a positive, go with Stone Age. If a negative, go with Waterdeep. I played both with a game-curious relative last month.

* 7 Wonders Not sure if this is the right game for 3 players, but it wouldn't be a terrible choice

* Catan
* Ticket to Ride Europe

These relatively fast classics have transitioned many people from 20th-century games to the 21st-century hobby. (Dear pedants: I know Catan came out last century.) You can't really go wrong with these.

* Troyes This is a good game, but a little more complicated to explain, IMO than any of the others on the list.

Even the lowest ones on this list are good, so in the words of Obi-Wan:

Trust your feelings.

If you're already interested in Maria and don't mind a long playing time, I would definitely make it one of your selections. A fantastic and beautiful game

Agreed - Maria would be my pick as the perfect game for 3 to spend the holidays playing. If you and your brothers are up for it, it's not all that complex rules-wise but feels quite different from your beer-and-dice Risk-like "war"game. And it just got a new reprint, so it should be easy to get.

China, Lords of Waterdeep, and Concordia are good for 3 as well, but much more on the abstract/Euro end. There's some on the list I'm not familiar with though.

Clash of Cultures is a good Civ/war-game to check out. If you like space themes, you might also really enjoy something like Merchant of Venus (second edition) or Xia: Legends of a Drift System. Direct conflict games are hard to balance at 3 players.

More on the Pandemic/Talisman front, I might recommend Mansions of Madness: Second Edition. Plays well with 3 and a lot of game to explore together.

3 players? All of this four games are pretty fast, easy to learn and got good feedback from other players.

Biblios (really nice)

Samurai (easy to learn)

Age of War

Small World

Hmmmm from your list Stone Age ... but it’s best with 4p.

I think I will try to bring Maria to the table, really want to play this game, The other two games will be a pick between Ticket to Ride, Stone Age and Civilization: New Dawn (instead of Clash of Cultures which I also have).

If I'm lucky I might get hold of TTR: Nordic Countries.

Cool - I hope you enjoy Maria. It's one of my favorites.

As far as Ticket to Ride, I would recommend going with the base USA or Europe game (and getting the cheap 1910 expansion if you get USA). They both play fine with 3. Nordic is fine, but it is limiting for a stand-alone version, although being in Sweden, perhaps you required to get it. India/Switzerland is my favorite expansion for 3 players, although I haven't tried some of the most recent ones like UK/Penn, which is supposedly awesome.

We played TTR: NC and For Sale. Both games well received but especially Ticket to Ride which we played twice.
