We opened the game, read the chronicle, and it doesn’t even tell me where the starting setup components are or any of the rules. What am I missing? Where are the influence tokens? Where are the cards we need to start?

Chronicle Page 1: Don’t open ANYTHING unless specifically instructed.

Then it tell us to read story 1 which tells us to unfold the board. That’s it.

What next?

On the bottom of that story card there is a sentence that says "extract card #x from the index".

Thanks Paris! J, did you find this instruction? If you missed it, just look at the first card in the Index. Make sure you carefully read all of the text on each card (to be safe, have someone double check it).

Yes, I'd heard Game 1 can be pretty short.

Game 1 isnt just to unfold the board. OP missed the Extract card 2 info, and then needs to follow all the other instructions to extract the other cards. There are quit a few cards to extract in game 1

Video!
You can also check out the following video: https://goo.gl/e2PWJi by Watch It Played. It gives you step by step instructions on what to do. It even tells you when to stop watching if you don't want anything spoiled. I haven't actually played the game yet but I have watched the video and feel pretty confident in getting it all started.

The BIGGEST RULE in playing/learning Charterstone:

READ EACH CARD (when directed) SLOWLY, CAREFULLY, AND ENTIRELY!

1. Slowly. Don't rush through the reading. Each sentence is loaded with information.
2. Carefully. Pay attention to each sentence and re-read it if you aren't clear what it means.
3. Entirely: Read the title, any background story (blue text), text, and the footnote at the end usually telling you which card to extract next.

That will clear up and help you avoid a lot of questions, confusion and mistakes/missed rules. We read each card as above, then, discussed the card to make sure we didn't miss something. This cleared up a lot of questions and confusion we might have if one person read it quickly or if we simply rushed through the card. It took us longer this way, but it helped us understand the game and helped us avoid several mistakes we were about to make.

We messed up game 1 by putting the board upside down. Had to restart the whole campaign after that.

Damn!

We had the exact same problem at my house-but with all the time it took me to turn the board the right way, the whole group was too turned off to try again.

Isn't the board two sided so you can play the game again with a refresh pack?

Or are you being sarcastic?

"Facetious", I think. Or "droll", in James' case. "Sarcastic" usually implies mockery or put down, and I didn't get that vibe from their comments.

I feel your pain. When we started setting up for game 5, we saw that the board was completely blank! We thought maybe the board had crashed or something, and lost our game state. Since we were missing the used components, we decided we would have to order a recharge kit and start over. We did that, and when we started setting up for a new game ... we found that our old game had been restored! Must have backed up from the cloud or something.

We ended up having a similar problem several times throughout the campaign; it felt like we ended up playing two parallel games...

Note: this post may include completely fake information.
