I need to gift to someone a game. It could be pure game about finance or a game where financial skills are used. He loves monopoly but that's because he doesn't know there are greater games out there! Any recos? Ideally the game could scale to up to 6 players but could also be played at smaller player counts. Game length from 30 mins to 2 hours.

Acquire. Vegas Showdown. Those are good, fun steps up from monopoly. Dunno if they work as well with two.

It's a little snarky, as it's definitely a biased negative view, but how about Greed Incorporated?
Edit: I don't think it would do 2 at all... and out of print. Terrible gift suggestion. But great game. Sorry.

Power Grid. Great at high player counts, not so much at low player counts. Made better at lower player counts with The Robots Expansion.

Why do you think they are not an adult? Also, FCM is going to be more than 2 hours typically.

How about For-Ex (which is a game about manipulating Foreign Exchange markets). You probably have to get it from the publisher: https://hollandspiele.com/products/for-ex

If they happen to like word games as well, perhaps BuyWord...

If you're up for some print and play, another amusing game about making a profit is TimeLine (not the one about history, this is different).

Corporate Pursuit is an older Monopoly like game about buying/selling stocks instead of property. Way OOP but last time I looked was still reasonably priced on Amazon.

Tesla vs. Edison: War of Currents has a very integral stock market portion to it as well.

Lords of Vegas has negotiation, investment, dice rolling, set collection and seems to be a good step up from Monopoly. It is also easy enough to be still in the gateway range. 2-4 players.

For-Ex just currency trading/speculation.

1817 18xx train game with stocks, but adds a full financial market on top of it all.

Executive Decision buying raw goods, selling finished products. Player driven market. Ruthless effeciency engine.

BLACK FRIDAY.

One of my most played games ever. And one of the few I can play twice in a row.

You must use the fan made rules - download files section. Original rules (translated from German) is flawed and the game stalls, lasting hours.

One player must know the rules fairly good. Miss one rule, and the game stalls.
Only other players need to know is if you want a color to rise, you must get them into the bag. Many black shares in the bag will end up in crash.

Thanks all for the "wealth" of information!!!

Here is a shortlist I came up so far based on what I know of the recipient. I'm not sure super heavy economic games are perfect for this stage in his life but perhaps later!

FINANCE
Stockpile + Stockpile Continuing Corruption expansion

STOCK HOLDING GAMES
Acquire
Chicago Express

BUSINESS
For Sale
Viticulture Essential Edition

One that no one mentioned yet is Modern Art. It's an auction game, but one that really deals with supply and demand. You also have a lot of decisions on when to put forth pieces, when to hold, and who to work with. I really enjoy it.

I was doing a text search to see if that one had been mentioned.

Something lesser known that you might consider is Jet Set, which superficially looks very much like a Ticket to Ride game but very much has a financial element at its core. You must earn money from completing short routes in order to fund the building of longer ones.

That economic element is what I enjoy most. Even so, money does not directly determine the winner. Winning comes from points, which come from completing routes. The money is needed to build the routes.

I would recommend Age of Steam. Money is tight, and the game is ruthless. Many many expansion maps for it as well.

I work in finance and I would recommend Imperial.

Although you have to pay attention to how resources are being deployed on the board, the game is won or lost on how you choose to invest. Plays 6 very comfortably and has lots of player interaction. Imperial 2030 will work just as well.

Many train games have a financial aspect. I particularly like Chicago Express and American Rails as they are short (1-2 hrs) and not too complicated. I also like 18XX games, but they're much longer and more complex. I also agree with the Jet Set recommendation.

I might also recommend Enemy Chocolatier, which is about acquiring the ingredients to make your chocolate.

Also I forgot Automobile, which is an excellent game about early car companies. It's on the more complex side though.

I didn't say they aren't an adult.

But unless you have a time machine, they will be older by the time they get more experience to handle longer playtimes and complex games...
