As US, vietnam, degaulle, decol, fidel, duck and cover, warsaw, indie reds, and blockade.

I put 4 in germany, 4 italy, 2 iran and headlined blockade (would have discarded degaulle). He headlined purge and I lost everything in germany.

I had considered opening with nothing in germany, but it seemed like a bad idea without having truman. Was what I did reasonable, or was there a better option?

Somebody may beat me, but they are going to have to bleed to do it.

I probably would have left Germany alone, headlined Blockade, and see what the opponent does AR1. If there's ever a free turn, one where you don't have to react, I would play Fidel with the event happening first and realign. You have a 35% of eliminating him Cuba with no influence in surrounding countries.

You were a bit unlucky. Most the time, it would have been ok.

Alternatives include going with a different West Germany opening, intending to play blockade and not discard and hold decol. Set up 3 France, 4 Italy and 1 West Germany, 2 Iran. With Truman in the deck, USSR is less likely to want to get into an ops war in W Germany. In this scenario, headline Fidel or maybe Duck and Cover. I'd keep 1 in West Germany to stop USSR control in 1 AR.

With blocade+deco in hand and no 4ops/defector I think this is fine to leave WG empty (set 4 FR/4It/2Iran) and headline blocade. With this setup you are more worry about a suez headline than redscare.

When purged your goal is to space degaulle and decrease defcon asap:
-to take thailand
-to be free about mil ops before your last play.
-to use fidel before he can freely play CIA.

You're right I should have considered that france would be reasonably safe because I have degaulle, and that he probably wouldn't know that I didn't have truman. Live and learn.

Fundamentally, that's a very bad hand, and RSP is a particularly nasty card for your opponent to headline with that hand. You don't have a good headline, so Blockade makes best sense; otherwise you're throwing away precious turn 1 ops. With Purge unaccounted for, it's a big risk to set up in WG and headline Blockade, so I think this hand calls for an empty West Germany set up. I'd go with Italy 4, Greece 2, Turkey 1, Iran 3. Hold Decol, play DLF event first, Vietnam hopefully goes ar6 where it doesn't matter for Thailand, space Fidel, Duck, Warsaw, and IR for ops as needed. If your opponent takes WG and then France, you'll need to control Spain. You should be able to prevent a Europe domination and he'll have spent a lot of resources for a very minor gain.

If you set an empty WG to avoid a redscare disaster then I think it makes sense to anticipate to space DG,Fidel is not eligible if purged and the event activate CIA threat.
What do you think about 4Italy/3France/1 Turkey/2Iran? You are protected against every headline+ar1 scenarios and dont give Algeria access for free.

With your setup, if he headlines socialist and succesfully coup Italy, he can take France with a 4 ops after you play DeGaulle.

Edit: he can't purge you and headline socialist in same time, but I still prefer to fill up France than mediteranean countrys.
