Rules look fair enough, I have two questions though

1) What is the downside of the roads? As I read it, it always makes sense to build them, respecting the limit of 1 on the board at any time, while trading to get the bonus. Is there a part I missed that makes this in any way risky?

2) All units apart from the captain cost the same? So it's cavalry all the way, with a sprinkle of the other units to negate the advantages of the other types?

your replies:

You can have only 1 commercial road per time. You can try commercial road or great market, not both together.

Cavalry is the best chose in most case for land combat, the worst for naval combat. Each unit has some special power.

Ah ok, so in the beginning you'd always use a comercial road when possible, and in the end, when great markets have developed, there is an alternative.
Ok, still seems like an auto+income for trading, needing an extra rule.

Missed the sea-battle part. The captains ability to cancel makes combat more complex, so it's not that simple at all times, but cavalry still seems the way to go as a rule of thumb.

One of the downsides to the commercial road is that it is more easily sabotaged. If someone sells / leaves your final destination with the same color on the cubes you are carrying, you simply can't sell it, thus not completing the commercial road.

When it comes to the units, you definitely want a composition of units that suits whatever you are attacking. The powers + captains can make an attack really powerful with the right composition.

Yes, you need a composition of all units, but it's enough to have one of each kind to negate the bonus for the other side, and then just downgrade cavalry accordingly when you get hit to keep it that way.
The captains abbility makes this much more interesting though and with them it's not that easy.

Ok, so the commercial road can be sabotaged or in some cases it's better to use the great market, but there is no downside to actually try it if you can, right?
