BGG has been around long enough that a lot of the numbers in the
database are pretty meaningless, because the players that they
refer to are dead (or inactive).

There ought to be a time horizon for all database entries, and
ideally, the horizon ought to be a sliding window. For example
a current thread says "Camelot is Dying" and the DB says there
are 52 subscribers to Camelot who might potentially be alerted
to that thread. But I wonder how many of those 52 subscribers
have logged in in the last year?

What about a person dying makes their numbers meaningless? What is it you want to filter? I can't make it out from the post.

I don't think the number of subscribers is stated anywhere. Did you mean fans?

So, when you see a list of bgg users, you want to be able to sort if by last login?

*Shrugs*

makes sense. would be amazing for trades.

When I'm planning to interact with a specific user, I already check
the last login. I'm more interested in aggregates only reflecting
active players. The most controversial would probably be the game
rankings; but the routine stats ought to be non-controversial, if
not necessarily easy to do.

For example, the "subscribers" stat ought to say
"52 subscribers, 3 active"
the "For trade" stats ought to say
"5 for trade, 0 active"
and so on.

or maybe the preferred form would be
"52 subscribers, 49 inactive"

I suspect, at some point, something like that will be added as BGG persists through the ages. At some point, how people rated a given game 50 years ago won't be as relevant as how they rate it then, and some notion of 'active user' will surely be incorporated into ratings/stats. I doubt the number of inactive users is a big distortion right now, and certainly less of a distortion than active users who do not maintain their ratings/fandom/etc.

I would have to see some numbers, but just for starters, what percentage
of all members in the bgg database have logged in during the last year?
I bet it is less than 25%. If I'm right, then the stats for the
games not zooming up in the charts are grossly distorted.

No, he does mean number of subscribers - you can see it when you hover over the Subscribe / Unsubscribe button on the main game page.
