We’ve played only two games so far, so obviously this is a preliminary experience.
But both times, Crab Clan has won.
They are the only capital in the south, and are close to the Shadowland territory cards.
Plus their +2 defense is very strong.

What are others’ experience?

I've played the game around 5 times now. In those games, 3 games have been with a Crab player. In our games, Crab has never won, but has consistently been getting 2nd or 3rd based on the number of players in the game. Here are a couple things that you guys can do to crack Crab.

1) Don't let him take all his provinces early game. Remember that you don't have to put your control points in your provinces at the start of the game. 2) Don't let him fortify more than once. If he gets off two Control tokens off in a Province, it becomes extremely costly to take it to the point that it's just not worth the Honor. Attacking Crab before they get their defenses online keeps them weaker.
3) Raid their lands. A landlocked Crab, even if his provinces will score a lot individually, will not win the game.
4) For late-game scoring, every Territory has 3 locations, EXCEPT Crab, which has 4.

Having a Capital in the south doesn't really matter as much, because all that cements is that they'll likely not have their Capital attacked. The tradeoff to this, though, is that Capitals aren't really worth more VP than other lands. While I admit, having the Shadowlands beside you is an advantage, he'll have to give up a Power (2) unit to capture each one. Doing this will delay his fortifications, so he'll have to make tough Choices.
